"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
~Proverbs 3:5-6

Self-Control vs. Self-indulgence
Character WOW!
“Instant obedience to the initial prompting of God’s Spirit.”
"Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” ~ Proverbs 25:28
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” ~ Galatians 5:25
Self-control is an important ingredient to building a successful life. Jesus demonstrated self-control in the wilderness when tempted by the relying on God’s word (Matthew 4). David refused to harm King Saul even though it was within his power to do so (1 Samuel 24:1-14). Exercising self-control leaves room for the Holy Spirit, produces a healthy life, and blesses others.
The Bible says that the tongue is especially difficult to control. James writes “no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8) The words we use can either bless or curse; help or harm; produce life or leave people wounded and dying! Proverbs 18:21 says “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Let’s seek to bless others with our words. Perhaps this week you could write a note of blessing to a friend, sibling, parent, teacher, or even someone who has caused you trouble in the past.
My Declaration: “I will exercise self-control in the words I speak to others seeking to bless and not to curse.”
Bible story: David’s refusal to harm Saul (1 Samuel 24:1-14)
Quote: “Self-control is the discipline of delaying impulse or gratification for a greater purpose or cause. When we exercise self-control, we are saying "no" for the sake of a bigger and better "yes." We are trading something in the here and now for something greater in the future.” ~ Focus on the Family
