Principal Piece.....
While the weather is getting chilly, our school is warm with children's laughter, curiosity, and dreams of the future. I am so grateful to have our Hawthorn Hills school family and I remind each of the children in our building that they belong here, that each of them has a place and that we believe each of them is a blessing. Our school is driven by the goal of kindness and helping students become productive, thoughtful, educated citizens that will continue to grow our community of Wausau in a very positive way. We are so grateful for the school, family and community connection as it is only together that we have the greatest positive impact on our children. In our very building, we may have the next great scientist who develops the cure for cancer, the next great artist, or even the next president. We will continue to do all that we can to make the Hawthorn experience a memorable and successful time in their lives.
Enjoy the details of the last two weeks below. If you have any questions, please contact us at 715-261-0045. Thank you for your continued commitment to our school! We are BETTER TOGETHER!

This is What Success Looks Like!
Hawthorn Hills Super Science!!!
In first grade science, we have just started our new unit on balance and motion. We are starting out learning how to balance shapes and objects. Here we are balancing a crayfish shape with counterweights to help us. We learned that our counterweights must always go below our balance point or it will fall over.
In third grade science, we've been looking at salt crystals that formed from our mock rocks, and we've now started learning how to identify minerals by their properties.
In fifth grade science, we have been learning how muscles and tendons work in our bodies to move our bones, and this week we added ligaments as connective tissues that connect bone-to-bone and act as guides for tendons. To learn these concepts, we made models of legs with "muscles" and "tendons" and thumb models with "tendons" and "ligaments."
We've also been busy in kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade! Kindergarteners finished their senses unit and are now starting their unit on pushes and pulls. Second graders are learning about the weather. We are looking at weather calendars from October and graphing the types of weather we experienced. We also learned about cumulus, cirrus, and stratus clouds. Fourth graders were fortunate to take a trip to the Wausau West Planetarium on October 30 and are now finishing their unit on the solar system in the coming weeks. We can't wait for all of our new learning in the coming weeks! Check out some awesome pictures below!

Are these salt crystals?

Therapy available at Hawthorn Hills
Therapy available at Hawthorn Hills – Hailey Monk from The Centre for Well-Being:
Many children need extra support from time to time to deal with stress they experience at school and/or home. For children, if they are stressed, they may NOT tell you, but you can see it in their behavior: how they behave may change, how they talk, how they are doing in school, how
they play or behave with other children.
If you believe your child could use 1 to 1 time with a therapist trained in working with children, please call and speak to Megan Berger, school social worker. Therapy is confidential and is usually covered by insurance.
If you worry you may not be able to afford counseling, Megan will share with you who to call to see if you may be eligible for a sliding fee for your child.
Come and say hello to the new therapist at school! Hailey is originally from the Wausau area. She has spent the last two years coaching Wausau School District athletics at the middle and high school levels. Hailey has been working with kids in the behavioral health field for the past six years. She is very excited to come onboard the Hawthorn Hills team for the 2019-2020 school year. Go hawks!!
