Message from your Proud Principal
As I look through the calendar for the upcoming week, I see two very important dates. One being the celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday and his legacy (see section below) and the other is the 100th Day of School. Yep, that's right...we will be celebrating 100 days of school for this school year on Friday, January 20. For those of you who have a kindergartener I know you are thinking, "How can this be? This year is just flying by!" And for our 5th grade parents, you are thinking, "Wow, time needs to slow down because my baby is a 5th grader and this is their last year in elementary school"! No matter what the 100th Day of School means for you...it will be a day of celebration at Parsons! Throughout the day teachers will be engaging students in activities celebrating the 100th day! Schoolwide we are asking all students and staff to dress up like a 100 year old person or create a shirt that represents the number 100. Be creative and let's have some fun!!
United We Serve
The Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday is an official day of service and celebrates the civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Students and staff of Gwinnett County Public Schools have January 16, 2023 off to observe this national holiday.
The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.
MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. During the last quarter-century, the MLK Day of Service has grown, and its impact increased as more Americans embraced the idea that citizenship involves taking an active role in improving communities.
On Monday, Jan. 16, and the days surrounding, you are invited to:
- engage with your community and create constructive action;
- act on Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity; and
- recommit by volunteering to serve others. You can clean up a public space, mentor a young person, or help those who are food insecure.
Together, we can strengthen ties to our Parsons community and one another.
Parsons PTA Fundraiser Presents...
I am super excited to share with you a picture of what our upper playground equipment is going to look like. As we jumped through the many hoops of approval in hopes that we could have the playset installed in early Spring, it looks like it will not be installed until late Spring or early Summer. I wanted to give a special thank you to all of you who participated in the fundraiser by donating money to go towards the new playground equipment. When we asked our students what they would like to buy with the fundraiser money it was unanimous...PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT!
AKS At Home
As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. Our AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families of children in grades K-5 so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that suits them and their schedule best. They can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information, and gain tools and suggestions on how to best help their children through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics. Click the link for more information. https://www.gcpsk12.org/domain/13286

Does your child need help with a subject at school?
In partnership with the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL), GCPS provides Tutor.com as an online tutoring resource for students. The expert tutors at Tutor.com can help your student work through a tough homework problem, improve writing skills, study for a test, review a difficult concept, and so much more! Live tutoring support is available daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition, students can receive “drop-off support,” 24-7, by uploading a document for tutor feedback that will be reviewed and returned at a later time. To learn more about how to access this resource and what is offered, click here.
