At Midland, we are working hard to teach reading skills to all our students in every grade. Did you know that reading practice at home (or being read to) increases a student's vocabulary, along with their fluency and comprehension? The infographic below shows the difference in vocabulary when students practice reading.
Our students visit our school library weekly and check out books of their choice. Nightly reading is one of our homework expectations. Please check in with your child to see what they are reading, and ask some questions about the characters, setting, and the plot.

What Causes Emotions?
Emotions originate in the Limbic System of the Brain. The Limbic System is located mainly in the lower/mid-brain and contains the thalamus, hypothalamus, the hippocampus and the amygdala. Students have learned about how their hippocampus and amygdala impact their learning. This month, we will be connecting emotions to those parts of our brains. Emotions can come from memories (housed in our hippocampus). Emotions can come from our situations and a sense of threat or lack of safety (housed in the fight/flight/freeze reactions from our amygdala. Emotions can be caused by hunger, tiredness, stress, lack of strategies/problem solving skills, or an overstimulated sensory system. In the next 4 weeks we are going to explore our emotions and how they are connected to our brain science knowledge and discuss strategies for soothing our emotions that may feel uncomfortable and managing our emotions in general.
January is School Board Recognition Month
We want to thank Alex Davis, Gil Mendoza, Ron Nerio, Tono Sablan, and Mary Sherman for the many hours they volunteer on behalf of every child in our school district. Their duties include setting the vision and mission of education in the district; establishing policy; adopting an annual budget; approving all expenditures; employment of personnel; curriculum, textbooks and courses; and deciding on school sites, building plans, and construction.
Attention Kindergarten & First Grade Parents
Healthy and Safe practices at Midland
Just a reminder of the things that we'd like you to consider before sending your child to school each day:
- A temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above?
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Repeated shaking with chills
- Muscle pain
- Sore throat
- New loss of taste or smell
These are some safety precautions we will be practicing at Midland:
- Students will be required to wear a mask on the bus, in the halls, in class, and at recess.
- Students will wash hands and use hand sanitizer throughout the day.
- Students will sit 3 feet apart in the classroom, and 6 feet apart during breakfast & lunch.
If your child has been exposed to COVID, or if they are showing symptoms of illness, you may not send them to school until they have been quarantined and symptom free for 10 days. Teachers will provide work for students during this time. We are counting on everyone to keep Midland safe for all students and staff. Thank you!
