Schlecty's Design Qualities
Schlecty's Design Qualities are to help teachers with student engagement. Before going into the qualities of design, let's review the levels of engagement by watching this short (4:07) video: https://youtu.be/256hluHbp2o.
In order to achieve the kind of engagement that will benefit the students the most, think about the following design qualities when you are planning future lessons.
- Content and Substance: Educators, in collaboration with the community, identify the essential learnings and skills that students must master.
- Product Focus: Engaging work almost always focuses on a product or performance of value to students.
- Organization of Knowledge: Content is organized so that access to the material is clear and relatively easy for all students.
- Clear and Compelling Product Standards: The standards for assessing the products or the performances are clear and important to students.
- Protection from Adverse Consequences for Initial Failures: Students receive feedback on their work and have opportunities to reach the standard throughout the process.
- Affiliation: The design of the work requires cooperative action between students and adults.
- Affirmation: Student products are observed by persons other than the teacher.
- Choice: Students are provided with choice in the ways of doing the work and the methods of presentation.
- Novelty and Variety: The work is varied in methods and format so that students use a variety of skills, media, and modes of analysis.
- Authenticity: The work has significance and is related to consequences in the present lives of students.

PACE Setters Meeting Update....
So per our last whole staff meeting - we are moving forward....At our last PACE Setters Meeting we brainstormed in the Math, Reading, Writing and Other content areas process we need to review and build K-5! We also designated first steps, which include:
Prepare Editing and CUPPS materials for Aug. handout and postings
DLI - Collect DLI process, materials/resources, time frame, do you do the weekly assessments
Rubrics - for each type of writing
QBB Process or ACE - what process do you use for short answers - a single sentence response or a longer short answer- with an example
Hafey - collect Matrices and Scope and Sequence
So, with that said, here is what the PACE Setters need from YOU by the end of April 26:
1. We need each grade levels DLI process, what resource you use, and if you give the weekly assessments to track progress.
2. QBB Process or ACE or something else - what process do YOU use for short answers - a single sentence response or a longer short answer- with an example
PACE Setters will be have prepared a CUPPS and editing marks poster for each of the classes so that this is ready for you at the start of next school year!
Please be sure to talk with a PACE Setter if you have a question (Amy, Hafey, Stephanie, Misty, Jennifer, Kathy, Johnny, Melany, and Alida)
