CVHS Counseling Weekly Update
November 13, 2020
A Message from Principal Distelrath
Dear CVHS Students,
How are you? I know that this is a difficult and challenging time for you. I know for some of you it has been hard to keep up. And for some it has been hard to stay motivated. And for many it has been stressful. I know you've heard this many times, but I can't say it enough, please let us know about your struggles. Reach out to your teachers, counselors, support staff, and administrators. Let us know how you are doing and how we can help. We are here for every one of you.
Feel free to email me at tdistelrath@cvs.k12.mi.us or send me a message in "Mr. D's 2020-2021 All Students Group" in Schoology (Access Code: RPB6-HN8N-GZSFC). Let me know what is going well and what could be improved. Or just say hi.
And remember this is a new marking period, a new start. Make it a good one. We will help you.
One last thing, I talk a lot about things like purpose and goals. It is important that you have a purpose and goals for yourself. It is also important that our school has a purpose and goals. Those are defined through our mission and vision statements. We've been working for the past two years to develop new mission and vision statements for CVHS. Please take a few minutes to provide your feedback related to these statements using this link: Microsoft Forms
Sincerely,
Mr. D

Dual Enrollment Process for Buying Books
Recommended process for purchasing books for the Winter 2021 semester is in-store shopping. We recommend that students return their Fall 2020 books at the time that they purchase their Winter 2021 books.
With COVID-19 protocols in place, both stores will have occupancy limitations. There will also be socially distant queuing lines designated in the buildings for students waiting to enter the bookstore. As a result, students may experience a longer wait time.
Fall 2020 textbook rentals are due on December 14th. Rental return and book buy back will be handled in a designated area within each of the bookstore locations.

Freshmen
What can a freshman do to get ready for post-secondary education? Although it may seem like a long way away, it will be here before you know it. There are some steps freshmen can begin taking to get themselves ready for college, trade school or the military. This week we will focus on trade school. See below for some suggestions on how freshman can get ready to attend trade school:
- Maintain your grades. As you’re thinking about the benefits of trade school, you might think that you can slack with your grades, but by keeping high grades, you increase your odds of being accepted into your desired program.
- Understand entrance exams can be required. Do not assume you can forget about doing well on standardized tests just because you’re attending a trade school. Trade schools have their own requirements that will demand proof of “general study” proficiency. Keep studying!
- Take relevant courses. Of course you want to pay attention to all your classes, but you should consider taking some that are related to your interests and that will help give you experience in the field you’re considering. Find out what types of electives we offer by viewing our course book http://cvhsguidance.weebly.com/uploads/5/4/4/5/5445300/2020-21_cvhs_course_book_-_final_6.24.20.pdf
- Review opportunities for skilled trades and apprenticeship programs. Visit our CVHS website for several helpful websites to assist you in this process http://cvhsguidance.weebly.com/skilled-trades.html
