Thursday Thoughts
Second Grade
Dear Second Grade Parents,
We have begun working in our small groups for math, book clubs (reading groups), and Words Their Way. In math, groups have been working on equivalent names for numbers, counting patterns on calculators, and playing the Number Grid Game. Each book club is reading a different chapter book. Mrs. Kaufman's group is reading The Best Seat in Second Grade, Ms. Holzer's group is reading Horrible Harry Goes to the Moon, and Mrs. King's group is reading The Chalk Box Kid. The children are learning the daily routines for Words Their Way, as well as mastering their spelling patterns and words.
Most children have finished their Me Books, which are on display in our hallway. Check them out at Back to School Night next week!
In social studies, we have been discussing different migration theories of how the ancestors of the Native American people (Paleo people) arrived on our continent. The children traced two possible migration routes on maps.
Our first field trip is to Brookside Nature Center on Tuesday, November 17th. We will leave CHS at 9:00 am. Our room parent, Shari Gronvall, will contact you about signing up, as we need some drivers that day.
Mrs. King was the "Star Student" this week in order to model the daily duties. A Second Grader will be randomly chosen every Friday to be the Star Student for the following week. If your child is chosen, he or she will bring home information and materials needed to prepare for the week. Every Second Grader will have the opportunity to be the Star Student. We will have a new Star Student next Monday!
We talked about our Teacher Specialties that will be on offer at the CHS 50th birthday celebration. Your children are already buzzing about what they want you to bid on! :) Hopefully you've had the chance to see the items that teachers are donating this year.
There's no need to bring in a snack tomorrow, as it's the Star Student's duty to bring in a snack on Fridays and Ella will also be bringing in a birthday treat.
Have a great weekend!
