Our counseling department is finalizing our course offerings for next year and may be adding a couple of extra classes - Principles of Technology and Journalism. The technology course will be a practical art elective focusing on mechanical, thermal, electrical, and fluid systems technologies with a focus on robotics design. Journalism will allow students to create a school newspaper focusing on local, state, and global topics.
Students should let Lin Hampson, Counselor, know if they are interested in one or both of these courses.
HHS Mariners Perform Well at Ocean Bowl in Seward
Two teams from Homer High School competed in the 2013 National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) in Seward Alaska from February 8th through the 10th with twenty-five teams from all over Alaska competing four areas: research paper, research presentation, remote operated vehicle (ROV) construction and contest, and the National Ocean Science Quiz Bowl.
Team Salmonids consisted of: Logan Reveil, Molly Mitchell, Aurora Waclawski, Barae Hirsch (prepared paper, unable to attend competition), and Nolan Bunting. They researched how the Kachemak Bay estuary relates to the local salmon fishery earning them a 12th place finish for their research paper, 5th place in the NOSB Quiz Bowl, and 8th place overall.
That Dam Team consisted of: Axel Gillam, Dylan Faulkner, Katherine Dolma, and Adi Davis.
They researched optimizing electrical production of the Bradley Lake Power Dam while protecting the associated estuary earning them 4th place with their research presentation, 1st place in the ROV contest, and 10th place overall.
Sierra Moskios came as an alternate; but competed with a team from Dillingham because one of their team mates had become ill.
The teams worked on their research papers, oral presentation, and practiced for the quiz bowl from September, 2012 to February 2013 and were coached by:
Kris Holderied, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association);
Barbi Fairlor, ADF&G (Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game);
and Bruce Rife, Advanced Placement Biology instructor at Homer High School.
Congratulations to our participating students and their sponsors for supporting our students as they extended their learning beyond the classroom walls.

Getting to know...
Kellie Bolin is the new physical science and earth science teacher at Homer High School. Originally from the "thumb area" of Michigan, Kellie grew up playing volleyball, basketball, running, and riding horses. She then attended Hillsdale College in Michigan on a track and field scholarship. While there she majored in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Biology and a 7-12 education endorsement. After graduation Kellie taught and coached in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Dakota.
Kellie and her family moved to Homer in June 2011. What drew them to Homer was the chance to experience Alaska and the wonderful outdoor opportunities. She and her family enjoy taking time to camp, hunt, fish, and play hockey.
