ATTENDANCE- Did You Know?
Teaming Up to Help Students Succeed in School: Attend to Win! Did You Know? Students who miss 9 days of school each year or less tend to stay on track for graduation Missing 10% of school days can negatively affect student performance (that’s just two days a month) Absenteeism is a predictor of dropping out of high school Good habits start when school starts! So do bad habits: students who miss 2-4 days in August/September go on to miss nearly a full month of school each year Together, We Can Make a Difference for Your Child! Kids listen (even if it looks like they don’t): talk positively about the power of an education to improve your child’s life outcomes: high school graduates earn 38% more on average than those without a diploma Set goals, praise progress: kids respond well to goals and learn best through honest and positive feedback Stand firm on healthy daily routines: commit to homework before devices, and the 8-10 hours of sleep per night that your child’s brain needs to self-manage Unless they are really sick, send them to school Report absences as soon as possible & follow up with teachers for homework and resources should your child be absent School avoidance is a real thing: if you suspect your child is avoiding school, talk to your child as gently as possible to find out why. If you need help, reach out to our teachers, counselors, and school administrators Stay in the know about your student’s social circle; peer pressure may lead to absenteeism Keep track of your child’s attendance; write it down so you both can see if absences are adding up You are not alone! Reach out to school staff or other community agencies if you need support: the sooner, the better for helping your child attend to win!
If you are planning on picking up your student during the school day, please call the Attendance Office as early as possible so that we can get your student a pass and have them ready in the office.

Building a Foundation for Success: Standards Based Instruction and Evidence Based Reporting
What is Standards-Based Instruction?
In education, the term standards-based instruction refers to instructional approaches that are aligned to learning standards — i.e., written descriptions of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage of their education. In other words, standards-based refers to the use of learning standards to guide what gets taught and assessed in schools.
How do scores translate to a grade?
Teachers collect a body of evidence for each enduring skill. Teachers will collect evidence for each enduring skill. The mode is them used to determine an overall score in each skill. Final enduring skill scores are then computed in PowerSchool and converted to a grade using the a conversion scale where a 3 and above in ALL SKILLS is an A:
Building a Foundation for Success: What are the Guidelines for Success?
These guidelines clarify expectations for students and staff and work to positively impact student behavior. The document below are the school-wide expectations and then we have other "Guidelines for Success" in various common areas of the building with the guidelines taylored to those areas. The next time you are at Discovery, try to spot some of these! We have them in the hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, auditorium, etc.
Building a Foundation for Success: Social Emotional Learning
What is SEL:
"SEL (Social and Emotional learning) is an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions."
From CASEL website:Fundamentals of SEL.
The CASEL framework focuses on the following components: Relationships Skills, Social Awareness, Self-Awareness, Self-Management, and Responsible Decision-Making.
This ties in with our Guidelines for Success, for example, the component of Self-Awareness, one of the indicators is: having a growth mindset, which is one of our Guidelines for Success.
Nursing Nuggets with Nurse Katelyn
Hello! My name is Katelyn Novacek and I am the school nurse at Discovery. I look forward to taking care of your student this year and will do everything I can to make it a fantastic year for them. I am here to facilitate any health needs your student has. I will be starting to review your student’s health cards and immunizations shortly, and reaching out to you if necessary. Please email me your students emergency care plan if they have one in place (they need a new one every year). I can certainly help get the forms to you and your students healthcare provider if needed. Please email me if there are any medications that you would like your student to have at school. We can also set up a time for medications to be dropped off. I also ask that any updated Immunization reports be emailed or dropped off at the school as soon as possible.
My hours will be 8:15 a.m.-3:00 p.m. M-Th and 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. on Fridays. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help make this the best year for your student.

MEDICATION IN SCHOOL

The medication bottle for school must be labeled , including student’s date of birth. If student will self-administer, in the case of an inhaler, please fill out form AF-6720-F. You should be able to get these forms off the FPS website under registration, or at your doctor’s office.
You can reach the nurse @ 701-446-3319 or by email: djhnurse@fargo.k12.nd.us.
Hope you’ve had a wonderful summer!
IMMUNIZATION UPDATE
This is a reminder that every student entering grade 7 is REQUIRED to receive a Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine and Meningococcal vaccine. To receive optimum disease coverage and ensure school requirements are met prior to entering grade 7, it is recommended your student receive these two vaccinations once they turn 11 years of age. All students in 7th and 8th grade should have one dose of Tdap and Meningococcal recorded on their immunization record before the start of the 2022-23 school year. Please bring a copy of the updated immunization record to the school.
Back-to-School Vaccine Clinics
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on-time childhood immunizations are essential because they help provide immunity before kids are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. As that protection wears off, teens need vaccines to extend protection. Being up-to-date with immunizations is critical in keeping kids and communities safe and healthy. Fargo Cass Public Health will hold back-to-school vaccine clinics on August 17 and 18, from 8 am – 4 pm. Fargo Cass Public Health is located at 1240 25th St S, Fargo. These are walk-in clinics, but appointments are welcome during regular immunization clinic hours and can be made by calling the Fargo Cass Public Health Clinic at 701.241.1383. Visit ForAllofUs.com for more information.

The free school meal benefits will expire after the last school day of the 2021 – 2022 school year.
ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING DURING SCHOOL HOURS
Fargo Public Schools is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all of our schools to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and staff. Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do so. The Raptor system will allow us to better screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools to provide us with a safe environment for our students and staff.
Upon entering the school building, visitors will be asked to present an ID, such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. If a parent or guardian for any reason does not have a US government-issued ID, the school staff member can use any form of identification and manually enter the person’s name into the Raptor system. Once entry into the building is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of their visit. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
A video overview of our pilot and how the system works is available at: https://youtu.be/8qwHwTmp-80

Liz’s Closet
A Discreet, Free Resource for Discovery Students in Need
What: Discovery strives as a team to meet the needs of all students as part of our mission to build a foundation for success. Liz’s Closet, a free resource at Discovery, aligns with this mission by providing students in need with items such as clothing, hygiene products, non-perishable food items, etc.
At Discovery, we hope to provide developmentally appropriate support to students in need by offering a means to obtain basic food and hygiene products in a discreet manner. Students utilizing Liz’s Closet will have access to reusable bags, so items are less visible as students are leaving the building.
Where: Liz’s Closet will be located in Student Services. The room being used as “Liz’s Closet” will be accessible through a trusted adult in the building (teachers, counselors, administrators, paraprofessionals, designated staff).
Who: Any student in need of these items is welcome to take what he/she needs with the help of a trusted adult.
How: Although students are welcome to directly ask a trusted adult at Discovery to use Liz’s Closet, to maintain privacy as best as possible, a student can simply draw a star on a sheet of paper and bring it to a trusted adult. The adult will then instruct the student as to when he/she can go to Student Services to collect what is needed. If this adult does not have a time that works for him/her, the adult will notify the appropriate counselor or Student Services staff member to be expecting this student sometime within the school day. Once in Student Services, the student will be escorted to the closet and can take what is needed.
If you know of anyone who may need to utilize this resource, please do not hesitate to contact a Discovery counselor or administrator. Additionally, if you would like to donate shelf-stable food, school supplies, or hygiene products to Liz’s Closet, please contact Taylor Ferderer (school counselor) at 446-3318.

FARGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AFFIRMS THE FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS TO PRIVACY ACT (FERPA)
Privacy Rights:
The Fargo Public School District extends official notification of their commitment to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which afford parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible student”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records.
- The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the District receives a request for access. If the District decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or student when notified of the right to a hearing.

(The District may also disclose “directory” information such as a student’s name, address, telephone number, date of birth, honors and awards. If the parent does not want directory information released, they must contact the school where the student attends within two weeks.)
