BSD Plan for May 8 Statewide Teacher “Day of Action”
Due to inadequate and unstable state school funding, the District will be reducing an estimated $35 million for the 2019-2020 school year. Based on information available at this time, this may lead to a reduction of 200 licensed positions, resulting in layoffs and involuntary staff transfers. To that end, the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) notified the District of their intent to participate in a May 8, 2019 walkout “Day of Action” event sanctioned by the Oregon Education Association (OEA). The purpose of the walkout is to draw statewide attention to the need for adequate funding for K-12 education after three decades of instability.
The May 8 walkout impacts our ability to safely operate schools. Therefore, we have determined May 8 will be a non-student day, with the exceptions noted below.
- AP/IB testing (to be proctored by administrators and classified staff; transportation will be provided, routes TBD)
- Previously scheduled Outdoor School taking place the week of May 6
- Extra-curricular athletics and activities
- Free student breakfast and lunch at limited sites, TBD
- After school programs currently in place (contact provider for hours of operation)
- Students attending Early College High School (licensed staff will not report)
BEA has agreed to a reduction of the contractual work year from 198 licensed days to 197 licensed days. Therefore, May 8 will be an unpaid day for all licensed employees, and the day will not be made up. The savings will help mitigate next year’s anticipated staff reductions.
We support the goal and urgency of convincing the Legislature to make a significant new investment in Oregon schools, however, we regret a walkout prohibits us from safely operating schools and the impact this decision will have on students and families. Therefore, May 8 will be an administrator-directed work day for classified staff allowing adequate supervision of the limited activities outlined above.
Further details will be forthcoming. The Beaverton School District will continue to tirelessly advocate for adequate and stable school funding for our students.
A great night for Westview and Make-A-Wish!
Branson, our Make-A-Wish partner, threw the first pitch at last baseball game. He also received a surprise message that his with will be granted on May 24! It was great night for our Westview community. Below are some pictures and a story that was shared on local news.
High School Student Survey
Student Survey
High school students will be surveyed this year by accessing a link through a Canvas announcement. The survey will be available in English and Spanish. The survey window is February 4-June 14. Westview will be delivering the survey on May 15 and 22.
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups.. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify <insert school contact information>.
Public Hearing for Title VI American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Grant Application
The Beaverton School District invites American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) parents, local businesses and community members to a public hearing for the Title VI AI/AN grant application on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Capital Center, 18640 NW Walker Rd., Suite B, Beaverton, OR 97006.
The Title VI AI/AN federal grant is designed to support the efforts of the Beaverton School District to meet the unique educational and culturally related academic needs of elementary, middle and high school Native American students so that these students can meet the same challenging state academic achievement standards as all students. Community members will hear how AI/AN grant monies will be spent in the 19-20 school year and will be able to provide input on these expenditures.
Following the public hearing there will be a District American Indian/Alaska Native Parent Advisory Committee meeting at the same location.
For additional information, please contact Brandon Culbertson (503) 356-3766.
Budget Update and Potential Impact at Westview
The proposed budget that will be presented at the District Budget Committee meeting on Monday, April 22, will be reflective of:
An anticipated District-wide shortfall of $35 million for 2019-20
District-wide personnel reductions that include administrative, teacher and classified staff
A budget reduction of 15% across schools
An increase in student-teacher ratio/class sizes
Elimination of funding for PYP coordinators and PYP world language teachers (among other programs)
Reduction of elementary intervention teachers from full-time to half-time
Our classroom staffing allocation will potentially decrease by 13 teachers. This could change in the coming months as enrollment numbers settle and the budget picture becomes more clear.
We acknowledge that the principles of inquiry-based instruction, student voice, transdisciplinary learning, science, technology and global thinking are and will continue to be a great asset to our students and staff. The district will continue to work with our PYP, STEAM, EL schools to explore possibilities that allow for continued partnerships in the future.
I encourage all parents to stay informed of the BSD budget process and participate as you see fit. We are also dependent on Oregon State Legislative decisions that can either add to or detract from our funding estimates.

Westview High School's Second Annual Golf Tournament
Please join us at the second annual Westview Golf tournament at Rock Creek Country Club. This is a fundraising event dedicated to improving our school facilities and equipment. Last year we were able to raise enough funds to put a fence around our track which has helped with athletic events, PE classes, and safety as we replaced the cord that previously surrounded the track. This year we are raising funds to buy a utility vehicle to transport students if they are injured, set up events, haul items, and allow quick access to our outside facilities.
If you are interested in playing in the tournament you can sign up at tinyurl.com/WestviewGolf. It cost $100 per player and that comes with 18 holes, dinner, golf cart, entrance in the KP/Long Drives and range balls. We also hold a silent auction and raffle at the event. If you are interested in donating or sponsoring the tournament please contact Troy Christiansen (503)356-3056 or via email troy_christiansen@beaverton.k12.or.us

Technology
New this week on our WHS Technology for Parents and Students Site http://bit.ly/whsfuture:
Library:
This week our library is testing out a fun new interactive Java installation. Each kiosk illustrates a use of OpenSource Java using an interactive format. As students walk by, the programs create music. Each program is offline, but they illustrate the use of Java. As the programs are opensource, if your student is interested, they can download them and edit them to create something new. In our building, Mr. Tensa teaches the Java class, in case this sparks an interest for next year. We love to hear students making music as they engage with our library. For more information, click here: http://bit.ly/whsfuture
More than a Library CreationStation Campaign:
The library at Westview High School has developed a Creative Space for the students with a green screen, arts & crafts, games, and puzzles. We'd like to expand our offerings so the students can continue to create and explore during their time with us. Would you like to help? Click this link to View our campaign. Please feel free to share! Every donation is tax deductible, and we would also lovingly accept used/new craft supplies you have at home. Everything helps :)
