Principal's Corner

As we enter into the month of May we often reflect back on the past year and think about all of the progress our students have made! It has been an amazing few months for me at CES to see these transformations in our students. We truly have dedicated, caring staff who go the extra mile each and every day to ensure EVERY child in our school is getting what they need. The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week and we want to say "thank you" for not only all of the big things you do, but all of the little daily things you do to make each child feel special!

Parents, please help me in thanking our staff for their hard work and dedication by joining me in giving back to them the first week of May. I have included the Teacher/Staff Appreciation calendar below which provides some great ideas and ways you can get involved in showing your appreciation!

Thank you so much!!

Ms. Skinner

Meet the new School Nurse!

Thank you to the CES staff for welcoming me with open arms as the first school nurse to represent the Lower Elementary School! A little bit about me... my name is Ms. Paige and I graduated here at Columbia Central in 2014. I went up north to Traverse City where I received my Associates Degree in Nursing. After I graduated nursing school, I went through the residency program at Henry Ford Allegiance where I worked in the Medical ICU for almost 2 years and will continue to work there during the summer months. It has always been a dream of mine to work with children and I am so excited that this opportunity presented itself when it did.

My mission as the school nurse is to foster the growth, development, and educational achievement of each individual student by providing expertise in health and promoting leadership and advocacy. To monitor health status, identify and address any unmet needs of student, families, and staff members. To create partnerships that ensure quality services that are effective, culturally appropriate, and responsive to the diverse, changing needs of the students and the community.

I look forward to meeting each of you and getting to know the students over the next couple of months before summer break! Until then, please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Comfy Cozy Day is returning to CES EVERY Wednesday until the end of the school year!

Helping your student with BIG emotions

As adults we all get burnt out sometimes, and it can be the same way for kids. Although they don't know what these strange feelings mean and how to calm the big feelings. Here are a few tips to help students as they are feeling overwhelmed or just full of worries this time of year.

- Have a set bedtime to be sure they are getting the right amount of sleep.

- Have a morning routine - arriving on time and being prepared for the day.

- Practice self-care with your student. For a child this may also look like painting, a dance party or a nice walk to take a minute and help them unwind.

- Remind them to breathe, routinely practice how to take big breaths when things feel overwhelming.

- Read a story to help them normalize their feeling such as "Ruby Find a Worry", "The Very Hungry Worry Monster" or "A Little Calm Spot".

- Encourage them to ask for help when they do not know how to calm their worries.

Access "Move This World" at home.

Move This World is our Social Emotional Learning curriculum. Students practice multiple weeks strategies through videos and activities in the classroom through this program. Use the above document to access and practice at home too.
