Principal's Update
Brent Elementary Weekly Newsletter
January 13 - 17
We're off to a wonderful start in 2020! Students and staff got right back into the swing of things at Brent. I watched many great lessons as I observed throughout the classrooms. Most frequently, I saw teachers and students engaged in small group reading lessons. We encourage you to continue reading with your children at night, each night. It's astounding how much of a positive effect this can have on your child in the long run.
There are many great events happening at Brent and in the district over the next few week. As always, if you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Thanks,
Ms. Baker

World Culture Night
For the past seven years, World Culture Night has been an annual event for Brent & Whitaker where we come together to celebration Finneytown's diversity. The event has traditionally been held at Brent. We are now expanding to include all of FLSD as well as moving the event to Secondary Campus to give us additional space for the event.
Date: Thursday, February 20th, 2020, 6:30 pm
Location: Secondary Campus, specific location(s) on campus TBD
PTA Outstanding Educator
Every other year Elementary PTA gets to select a Finneytown PTA Outstanding Educator. This needs to be a certified staff person (teacher, administrator, therapist, counselor). We need nominations to select from. Anyone can nominate (students, family members or staff)
Please read below and pass on to anyone involved with our schools.
Looking for Nominations for Finneytown Outstanding Educator!
If you would like to nominate an Elementary teacher or administrator please email Elise Fessler by January 15th.
- Include why you are nominating this Educator. (Remember this is a PTA award and PTA involvement should be a part of the nomination. This does include events PTA coordinates like carnival.). The more detail the better.
- Anyone can nominate, but the nominee must be a certified staff person.
- Put “Outstanding Educator “ in the subject line and email me at bfsing@cinci.rr.com
- Send questions to the same email.
Counselor Corner - Mrs. Rouse
Last week students reviewed school-wide expectations and what it means to be respectful, responsible, safe, and a problem solver. Students did a wonderful job getting back into the swing of things and many Brent Bucks were earned! If you are available to help run the Brent Buck store, please let me know.
This week, classrooms will revisit emotions, the Zones of Regulation and healthy coping strategies. Each student will be making their own "toolbox" with what helps them get back to the calm, happy "green zone."
If your child has been participating in one of my lunch groups, I will be providing an update soon. Some groups will be changing over the next several weeks based on progress and student needs.
I encourage you to mark your calendars for the annual World Culture Night on February 20th! It has been a joy to watch this event blossom over the years. We have officially outgrown Brent and Whitaker spaces. This year, it will take place at the Secondary Campus in celebration of Finneytown's diversity district-wide! Please let us know if you are interested in representing a country, volunteering in any way, or even being a part of the planning committee. More information to come!
Fernside, a local non-profit grief organization, partners with Brent Elementary each year to support children and families who have experienced loss. Grief can be loss of any kind, including the loss of communication or time spent with a loved one. A qualified and trained grief counselor from Fernside will be coming to Brent to lead small groups for 6 weeks (exact dates TBD). I will also participate in group sessions and have seen the grief group experience benefit more than 30 students and families. Signed permission is needed to participate. If you are interested in more information, please contact me as soon as possible.
Catalyst Counseling
Finneytown Local School District collaborates with MindPeace, a local organization that coordinates mental health services for educational agencies. Their mission is to “ensure that there is a seamless system of mental health care for children and adolescents that meets specific characteristics of quality, provides a continuum of care, has system connections, and is affordable.”
Through this collaboration, Finneytown formed a new partnership with Catalyst Counseling LLC beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. This ongoing partnership focuses on increasing access to mental health services for students focusing on strengths. We have a team of mental health professionals working in all our buildings.
Catalyst’s services are provided in each of the school buildings. Families have the ability to utilize their private insurance, Medicaid, or private pay to access services. The partnership with Catalyst is self-sustaining and does not require any financial investment by the district.
Families interested in services should contact their child’s school counselor (Nancy Rouse - nrouse@finneytown.org)
