UOI 1: Who We Are
An inquiry into the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human.
Central idea: There are rights and responsibilities of being a member of a global community.
Key concepts: Form, Perspective, Responsibility

What we will learn about this UOI
In this UOI we will be learning the ABC's of communities and our rights and responsibilities within our local and global communities.
A. The Foundations and Function of Government
- How rules and laws are made and necessary to maintain order and protect citizens
- How school and community rules promote orderliness, fairness, responsibility, privacy, and safety
- Identify leadership positions and organizations in the community and explain how they can be helpful in maintaining safety and order
- Democratic skills and attitudes are associated with being a responsible citizen
- Connect certain people, symbols, songs and poems to the ideals they represent, such as George Washington portrays leadership, the American flag represents loyalty and respect, and the Star Spangled Banner represents courage and freedom
B. Individual and Group Participation in the Political System
- Exploring how Contributions and events are important to the American political system
- Describe the contributions of local government leaders and current leaders of their school and community, such as county executives, county council or mayor, and city councilb.
- Explain how contributions of people recognized in holidays, such as Memorial Day and Constitution Day, represent democratic beliefs and attitudes, that include rights and responsibilities, loyalty, respect, and courage
C. Protecting Rights and Maintaining Order
- Describe the rights and responsibilities of being a participating member of the school and the community
- Recognize and describe how making choices affects self, family, school, and community
- Identify concerns in the community, such as safety issues and pollution problems and ways to resolve these concerns

Math
- Graphing date in various formats including (line plots, bar graphs, pictographs, data charts)
- Solving problems using data and referencing charts and graphs for information
- Solving Problems using other forms of quantities like money, time, measurement
- Identifying difference in data and measurement
We are working our way through Module 7 and will cover the following topics during this unit:
- Topic A: Problem Solving with Categorical Data
- Topic B: Problem Solving with Coins and Bills
- Topic C: Creating an Inch Ruler
- Topic D: Measuring and Estimating Length Using Customary and Metric Units
- Topic E: Problem Solving with Customary and Metric Units
- Topic F: Displaying Measurement Data .
Language Arts
Reading: Students will be assessed one final time for this year using the Fontas and Pinnell reading assessment. Students will be able to reflect on their yearly progress and goals to see if they have met their goal for the year. Students will be working on the strategy of monitoring their reading and fixing up their mistakes (See the parent tips attached below for more information) Students will also be exploring the genre of mysteries this unit. We will be reading the story "Ivy and Bean: Takes the Case" as our class read aloud and working on exploring mysteries as a genre.
Language: Students will be working on composing and decomposing sentences to make simple and compound sentences this unit. Students will also be working with adjectives and adverbs as well as exploring proper use of the apostrophe to form contractions and to show ownership.
Math and Reading Connection: Students will be exploring and connecting the skills of reading Diagrams, charts and data in math and in Language Arts. Students will work on getting more information about what they are reading by interpreting data in charts. Please see the parent information and tips below for more information.

UOI SUMMATIVE
- Our end of unit summative is coming up and students will be completing an opinion writing piece demonstrating all that they have learned from this unit and applying this learning into personal action. Summatives will take place in the classroom and can not be done at home however if you would like to help prepare your child please feel free to discuss the central idea, lines of Inquiry and connections to actions with real world examples within their home and family. Students can also share what things they have talked about in school and what things they have learned about families, communities, roles, and how these things help us meet our needs. Please review the assignment description and rubrics on Managebac by clicking on the calendar and looking for the date June 13th which is the day it will be due. We will be working on it over the last two weeks of the Unit.
Art
Students will explore symmetry and asymmetry.
Students will learn mixed media techniques and how to use safely some art tools.
Students will create cardboard auto-portrait collage.

AQI
- Students are going to learn about their favorite profession and what they are going to be when they grow up. They will learn how to ask others what they want to be when they grow up and answer the question.

- Students are going to learn Grammar: Masculine and feminine in nouns.
- Students are reviewing the vocabulary of the family members:

Quran
- Memorize and understand Surah Al-Balad and Al-Fajr.
- Tajweed – practicing fluency and reading in the Quran.
Islamic Studies
- Akhlaq: Keeping promises, being thankful, spreading salam, helping in good things, kindness to animals.
- Hadith: أية المنافق ثلاثة
- Adab: adab of greeting, entering a house, speaking, sneezing, yawning, eating.
- Seerah: review Prophet Muhammad's life from birth to open call to Islam
