Message From Superintendent Mueller
Good afternoon, CUSD,
It’s been a short and very busy week in CUSD. We are sending our newsletter out today as we look forward to the well-deserved Presidents’ weekend. Students return on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
We are very excited to welcome our new School Board Trustee, Bruce Shepherd, who was selected for interim appointment by the Board on Tuesday night out of a field of 7 very qualified candidates. Bruce previously served on the Board for 12 years and all four of his own children went through CUSD schools. I would like to offer a special thanks to the 7 candidates who applied for the position. The level of professionalism, insight, integrity, and commitment to students by every one of the candidates was inspiring. I am hopeful that we will see many of the applicants on district committees, or the November ballot.
Congratulations to our District Nurse, Joellen Semo, on receiving the San Diego County School Boards Association Staff Member of the Year award. Read about Joellen and her incredible work on behalf of the students and staff at CUSD.
CUSD will facilitate a community forum to discuss the Long Range Plan on Thursday, February 24, from 5-6:30PM, in the boardroom. Please join if you are interested in attending/participating in this informative and interactive discussion as we explore initiatives and develop goals for our district.
On Monday the California Health and Human Services Agency hosted a press conference briefing on Covid-19. Although the state mask mandate for general public settings expired on Tuesday of this week, guidance has not changed for public school settings. The school mask mandate is still in effect and CUSD will continue adherence to CDPH guidelines. I understand this has been of great interest to our community, and the state has promised an update by February 28.
Thank you again for your patience and cooperation.
Have a great weekend, CUSD

Caught Being Awesome!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students during the COVID Pandemic, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments during these trying times. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Benny, Tanya, and Terri were each so helpful and welcoming in my very first hours on the job. Not only did they competently support me in completing final paperwork and taking care of logistical issues, each of them also demonstrated warmth and appreciation as they welcomed me back to the team. I had a fantastic first day back with CUSD filled with so many great connections and positive conversations, but these three colleagues helped me to get my first day off to a wonderful start from the moment I walked in the district office doors.
- Rhonda (Covid team-CHS) was beyond helpful and comforting when my son got covid. She made an extra effort to check in while he was sick and guided us along the paths and protocols of what to do…she put us at ease and I so appreciate her kindness. Thank you Rhonda!
- Mrs. White has been my son's English teacher this semester. She is thoughtful, kind, and understanding. Her class content is interesting and engaging, and my son enjoys discussing the material he learns in class at home. We are grateful that she has provided quality instruction as well as a compassionate environment at CHS during this challenging time.
Multiple parents, students, and staff have recognized the following staff for their support, guidance, and going above and beyond for our CUSD family: Student Hannah, Kelly Sailers, and Catherine Burling.
Click here to recognize an employee or volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference. Those who are "caught" will receive a copy of the positive words that were shared about them and a "Caught Being Awesome" decal. Please take a minute or two to brighten someone else's day!
