Around the library...
- Kindergarten started a new unit on folktales. We have learned that folktales come from all around the world and have been passed down from generation to generation and that there are tons of different versions of similar stories. Some of the stories we've read are The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Wolf Who Cried Boy and Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears. They are getting really good at looking for similarities and differences between the books!
- First grade continued to explore nonfiction by learning about text features. To show off their skills, they participated in a book scavenger hunt! We also looked at an amazing e-book app called Epic and are preparing for a mini-research project on animals.
- Second grade finished up their unit on using the library catalog and used their new knowledge to do a shelfie scavenger hunt around the library. Students had to look up books by subject in the catalog, find a title that fit that criteria, and then use the call number to find it on the shelf. Hooray for learning to use the library!
- Third grade shifted back to reading fiction this month. We have been using some of my favorite picture books (Xo, Ox and After the Fall) to explore character traits, character growth and change and theme.
- Fourth grade has been honoring Black History Month by studying major events in black history in America. We are tying this into their current language arts curriculum that is focused on reading like a historian and researching certain time periods. Students have been exploring deep concept and putting their critical thinking skills to good use.
