Happenings for the Week
February 24, 2020
This weeks is has a few events. I have also included some information that was shared via email earlier. Please review and put any future presentations in your calendar.
Cape Cod Times Rising Star
Do you know an outstanding high school senior who deserves recognition?
Rising Stars, a special section the Times will publish in the spring will profile some of the Cape and Islands' most distinguished high school students.
End of February (I think, see below) will be the deadline to let the Times know about that terrific teen. You will need to write a letter nominating the student. I recommend re-writing the letter of recommendation you may have written to meet the Cape Cod Times requirement.
Please send email letter to Gwenn Friss at gfriss@capecodonline.com
Here is a link to last years winners.http://static.djlmgdigital.com/cct/capecodonline/special/RisingStars2019.pdf Unfortunately not one of our students were named. I want to change that this year.
Remember to briefly describe why you think this student deserves recognition.
Individuals may nominate a maximum of three students, and each nomination should be no longer than one page. Longer nominations will not be considered. Please do not combine multiple nominations in one letter; each student must be nominated separately. Be sure to include contact information for the students so we can let them know if they are chosen to be profiled in the supplement.
To be considered, students must be outstanding in at least one of the following areas: achievement in the face of great odds; academic achievement; leadership or community involvement. Please be specific and include details of what makes this graduating senior a Rising Star.
Requirements: Length: Letters must fit on a single page with a maximum of 500 words. Two-page nominations will not be considered.
Deadline: Delivered by 5 p.m Feb. 28 (That date was from 2018, which was the only reference to submission that I could find. Please submit by the end of the week.)

Trimester 2 Literacy Update From Mary Kew
Now that Trimester 2 is well under way, I wanted to send out some literacy reminders!
In order to maximize student success, they should be actively engaged in rigorous discipline-specific reading and writing every day! Please see the Literacy Board in the mailroom for some ideas for quick literacy strategies that you can use in your classroom and shops daily. The more you use them, the more they become part of your routine, the more improved your students will become in your content area. Please call me, email me, or come see me for more information regarding these quick and easy strategies! I am happy to come in and model them for you in your classroom or shop or you are always welcome in my classroom to see them modeled as well!
In addition to daily literacy, please make sure your students engage in at least 1 text-dependent literacy exercise each trimester. Don't be afraid to have students complete these kind of assignments more often. The more they write, the easier it becomes for them, and the more their skills improve. Students should read a discipline-specific text and engage in active reading. This could be from your textbook, an industry journal, periodical, etc. The content of the reading should be something you are working on in your class or shop and tie to your content standards. Amy McHugh in the library is an excellent resource to help you find appropriate text. The following is a few reminders for your Trimester 2 Literacy:
· The writing should be tied to a piece of text from your discipline that you are currently working on.
· Students should show evidence of active reading. I'm happy to model this for you and your students. They will resist active reading unless you insist on it!
· Writing responses should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs and follow the CCT Writing Order of Operations and be scored with the CCT Writing Rubric. When teachers use the same rubric for writing school
wide, it increases the success of student writing. If you are planning to have your students write an essay with an introduction and a conclusion, such as a 5 paragraph essay, please see me for more
resources.
· I’m available to help you create a prompt as well as model active reading and writing in your classroom and shop!
· Literacy Resources are available on the website under Faculty Resources.
Thank you so much for supporting our students’ literacy skills!!!

March Presentations
As may or may not be aware substance issues have plagued us this whole school year. If you are not aware, we have just about doubled marijuana suspensions this year in just over half the time compared to the 2018-19 school year. This is also true when comparing this year to the 2017-18 school year. The main culprit is the marijuana vaping. It is nearly undetectable to the human nose, which students clearly know. It is also very easily attainable on the streets. The vape detectors have been really helpful in detecting these issues, which has led to many suspensions. However, students know this and STILL use the products in the bathrooms.
In March we have secured some folks to give educational awareness talks/demonstrations to our students about the dangers of drugs. Students will be pulled from your class/shop. I know folks do not want students losing learning time. However, losing the students for one hour is better than losing them for 5-25 days. This has become a health crisis for our youth, and we would be irresponsible and neglectful if we didn't provide educational support and information.
On the following dates Kevin Rosario from Gosnold will come to present to students. These will occur during the morning. I tried to schedule it when it would have the least impact and still worked with Kevin's schedule.
Gosnold Presentations
March 13
- 8:15-9:25 12th grade (144 students- 33% of shops have PE)
- 9:30-10:45 10th grade (155 students)
March 19
- 8:15-9:25 9th grade (162 students- No 9th grade science classes)
- 9:30-10:45 11th grade (130 students- Most AG students will probably not be able to participate)
We also are bringing in Mark Schieldrop from AAA to present to students about marijuana and driving. He will come in for PE classes. I have him scheduled for March 3, 4, 12, 17, 24 and 25. The last two dates are MCAS dates which I know are always a problem for PE classes. This would allow for students (9th on one day and 11th on the other) to have the training and pull the stress off of PE teachers on keeping them quiet during MCAS. I attached some info so you know what it is about.
If you have questions or suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks
Billy
