From Dr. Gruman
Dear Northwest Families,
This week has been exciting and rather fast paced with activities and learning opportunities. We have two more weeks remaining in our third quarter. This is a great time to check with your students about any missing assignments or make-up work that needs their attention.
Here is a resource guide for parents about Canvas: Canvas Guide. Canvas is our learning management platform where assignments, projects, and assessments are kept in real time. Teachers then sync those grades to Skyward weekly. Skyward serves as our student data portal where final grades, transcripts, and educational records are housed. If you have additional questions about your student's academic progress, they can access their student portals and share information or you are welcome to reach out to their teacher as well.
A reminder - the spring sports season opens on February 27th. Students must have a completed athletic physical on file prior to participating in try-outs or practice. We hope that warm weather returns next week so we may have a strong start to the season!
Have a wonderful week!
All the best,
Dr. Lisa Gruman

From the Nurse
Vaccination Exclusions ARE Occurring:
If you have received any information stating that your student is missing any immunizations, then please bring us proof of vaccination. This is primarily regarding the Meningitis ACWY that all 11th graders should have received at the age of 16 per KS state law. Please email (StacieLaney@smsd.org), Fax (#913-993-7464), or have your student bring in proof that they have received this immunization IMMEDIATELY!
Keeping Our Students & Staff Healthy
In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physicians diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.
One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child at home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.
