A Message From Mrs. Bender
The GOAL remains to keep OIS open for in-person learning! It is more important than ever to be monitoring yourself and your family for symptoms of COVID-19. Accurately reporting symptoms and disclosing information about being close contacts is crucial to helping us avoid an outbreak at OIS. If you have any questions about symptoms and/or find yourself or your family with a positive case or close contacts, please reach out to Rachael Robinson, School District Nurse and myself. I will be able to provide you information about how learning will happen for your child on quarantine and dates of your child's return to school.
Many hopes you have a very Happy Holiday season filled with new traditions and many joyful memories made!!!
Happy Holidays,
Julie
Help us slow the spread of COVID-19:
- Stay home when ill.
- Wear a face covering when in public if physically able.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, tables, etc.
- Limit unnecessary travel, events, or large gatherings.
Remote Learning for Students in Quarantine
Our goal is to ensure all students stay on pace and are provided the best possible experience regardless of what environment they are in. OIS teachers are dedicated to your child regardless if they are here in person or at home (learning remotely because that is what works best for your family at this time OR in quarantine).
If your child needs to be in quarantine, please contact the OIS office as soon as possible so we can get them set-up in the correct Schoology course.
Please click on the link below for further information.
Student Expectations and Guidelines
The remote schedule will be in your child’s Schoology course.
We look forward to this learning opportunity and hope you find it valuable!
Winter Concert
This year's holiday concert will be virtual for the safety, health, and well being of students, family members, and staff.
The December Winter Concert will feature one song from each grade level. 3rd grade will be singing a song and signing ASL all about the lights and colors of a winter scene, 4th grade will be using instruments to play a familiar song about snowing, and 5th grade will be performing an African song featuring Zulu, basketballs and instruments. A December Celebration of winter, fun and snow! We look forward to sharing our virtual concert with you in December!
The December Family Challenge
The December family challenge is to read with your child at least 3 times before December 18th! . By submitting the form your child will be entered to win this month's prize, which is a book basket!
Forms must be submitted by December 18th, 2020.
Jack McNitt - 3rd Grade
Finley Droher - 4th Grade
Waylon Osterbauer - 5th Grade
3.5- Proficient PLUS- Exceeds the grade level learning target. This means a student demonstrates and applies learning above grade level proficiency on a consistent and independent basis. The student can apply learning skills to new and more complicated tasks.
3- Proficient- Meets grade level learning target (this is our goal for ALL students). This means that a student consistently and independently demonstrates grade-level understanding of the learning target.
2.5- Developing PLUS- Making progress toward grade-level learning target. This means that a student is putting the effort in, but has not yet shown, on a consistent basis, that they understand the content or the skills that we are utilizing in class.
2- Developing- Below grade-level learning target. Developing means that a student requires teacher assistance and support in order to demonstrate grade-level understanding of the learning target.
1.5- Basic PLUS- Making progress toward developing- This means that a student is putting the effort in, but has not yet shown, on a consistent basis, that they understand the content or the skills that we are utilizing in class and are one grade level below target proficiency.
1- Basic- Significantly below the grade level learning target. Basic means that a student demonstrates limited understanding of the grade-level learning target and is significantly below the grade-level learning target.
*- Not applicable at this time. This means there is not enough evidence to earn a score at this time.
S- See IEP Progress Report-This means the student is getting services in Special Education for academics.
I hope this information provides a better understanding of how our grading system works here at OIS. Again, we emphasize your child’s most recent evidence of learning- standard based reporting allows students to take more ownership for their learning as expectations and learning targets are clearly presented ahead of time. The educational journey to mastery of the State Standards takes time. If you are not seeing 3 and 3.5s, that is OK! Mastery of a standard takes practice, review and time.
If you have any questions in regards to your child’s report card, please reach out to their teachers.
