Response to Inquiries

As many of you know, last Friday, the U.S. Dept. of Education and Office for Civil Rights issued guidance regarding transgender students in schools. This is an evolving area of law and our district does not have a policy specific to transgender bathroom access. We do have a practice of working individually with students and families to make reasonable accommodations that meet students’ needs in accordance with federal law.

Leadership Development Academy

Campus Services will sponsor the Leadership Development Academy for teachers who want to further develop their leadership skills as future campus leaders. This program will span over 6 sessions during the 2016-2017 school year. Applications will be available on August 11th and principals will need to complete a reference. The tentative deadline for applications is September 2nd. There will be limited spots in the academy and a quick timeline for applications, so I wanted to share this information now so that you can share it with your teachers.

After the suspension of the Lions Lunch for 3 1/2 weeks back in February, I discussed with the Student Principal Advisory Committee the importance of making our campus a safe and positive place. I explained the behaviors I needed to see for the rest of the year. One pillar of PBIS is to acknowledge and praise students for positive behavior. During the last couple months I praised students for making good choices, attending attending tutorials, picking up trash, reporting unwanted behavior and much more. We had some students that struggled with some of those things, but overall, our student body did what was asked of them. I asked them what incentives would they appreciate for their positive behavior. Yes...Nike shorts and hats received the most votes. I recognize that some may disagree with it, but it is only for eight more days.
