Message from Frankley School Board of Trustees
Confirmed Strike Action by Teachers
School Closure Wednesday 29 May 2019
Dear Parents / Caregivers
I would now like to confirm with all parents and caregivers that the teachers and principals have voted to strike for the whole day on Wednesday 29 May 2019.
As a result of this the Board of Trustees have made the decision that Frankley School will be closed for the day on Wednesday 29 May 2019.
We appreciate the inconvenience of strike action on families, but we hope that this early notification of closure of the school allows you to make alternative arrangements for this day.
Regards
Campbell Third
Board Chair
Why Strike?
The decision to take further strike action was not taken lightly by any of us. For the first time, both primary and secondary teachers are striking together because the crisis in education hits us all very hard and we need the Government to understand how serious it is.
Schools are grappling with the fallout of a 40% nosedive in the number of people training to be teachers between 2010 and 2016, even while the population grew by 400,000. While the situation improved a little last year and the Government has announced an urgent $95m package to recruit teachers, this is not sufficient to address the crisis. Schools struggle daily to find enough teachers to meet their relief teacher needs and this will worsen as winter approaches. There is also a desperate need for more support for children with additional learning needs.
The fact is that teaching is no longer considered an attractive profession due to long-term under-funding of the education sector. A significant pay jolt is part of the solution, alongside significant improvements to our heavy workloads. Otherwise our schools will end up with larger class sizes and more teachers leaving.
On Wednesday 29 May we hope you will join us at our local public event, likely to be from midday. We would love to see you and your children standing with us - together we are a community and we can make a difference. We will advise you of further details when they are confirmed.

Ko Taranaki te maunga - Teacher Only Day
On Monday 27 May Frankley School will be closed due to a teacher only day. The teaching staff will be working with Bek Galloway. Bek is supporting our literacy development across our hubs. She has already spent 2 days observing our hubs and gathering student voice to help us set goals. She will then return later on in term 2 and 3 to continue working closely with our staff. This is our one and only teacher only day planned for 2019. Thank you for your support.
School Board of Trustees' Election 2019 Reminder

You can nominate another person to stand as a candidate, or you can nominate yourself. Forms have to be signed by both parties. Our Last Sports Exchange
Hello our names are Baxter, Koby and Mason
The rippa rugby tournament was very challenging and super fun. We had 4 amazing games, we almost won all of the games but we just tied with a team. But I still think my whole team had a great time apart from a bee sting. Good work to everyone who played on Tuesday.
We had a few tough game’s but me and my team played hard and it was really fun. We won 3 game’s and tied one so the Warrior’s really had some good games. That was the B Team.
Now the A Team. We played 4 games. We won 2 out of 4. It didn't matter if we lost, it was just for fun. I hope my whole team had lots of fun. Congratulations to all the people who played in the Hurricanes, good job for trying hard and persevering.

Interschool Sports and Rippa Rugby Uniforms
How flash do our tamariki look? Our new uniforms are fabulous. Thanks to Pelorous Trust for funding our new rugby attire. They were also used for Rippa Rugby on Tuesday. Mr Anderson is having a blast with sports at the moment. The next interschool game is next Thursday at Coastal Taranaki School. Hockey, basketball and netball season has also started. Thanks to our coaches for supporting our children to give things a go. We have new singlets ordered as well. Thanks to SFRC for funding these, as well as a top up of sand for our children to enjoy during learning through play and at break times.
NGĀ KUPU O TE WIKI
This week’s kupu is ‘Mīharo’, which means wonderful. There would be many occasions when you want to say that something is mīharo! Next week’s kupu is ‘Kua marama?’ which means ‘do you understand?’. This could be used when you are giving instructions to children to check that they know what you are meaning, whether it be in the classroom or in your homes. “Kua marama?”.
WHĀNAU PUANGA WHAKANGAHAU AT MURU RAUPATU MARAE
We are very excited to let you know that this year to celebrate Puanga (the Māori New Year) we are once again heading out to Muru Raupatu for a noho marae (sleepover) and celebration day with a delicious hāngī to finish it off. The whole school will attend the celebration day and those whānau that would like to stay the night with their children can do so. An information notice will be sent out shortly with more details. For the moment, save this date - Tuesday 25th June to stay the night, Wednesday 26th June – Celebration Day.
Mounga Taranaki
Last week Kahikatea and Tūhono had amazing experiences up on our beautiful mountain. We really appreciated the support of our families for organising the right gear to ensure our children were dressed appropriately for an ever changing environment. There was such a buzz as children arrived back to school. The visit gave more meaning to our school pepeha:

Te Puawai's Trip To Rotokare Scenic Reserve
On Thursday Te Puāwai visited Rotokare Scenic Reserve near Eltham. The children enjoyed working in the outdoor classroom and going for a bush walk. They learned more about native birds and the many uses of different plants found in native bush.
