Jessica Backinger-Jackson Young Professionals Women Panel Discussion
On March 8 at the Jackson Country Club, a fabulous panel of women shared their secrets to success. The panel discussed ways to balance career, family, and happiness! Thank you to all Junior league members who were able to attend!
New Member Profile: Katrina ("Kate") Freedberg
Who recommended you to join JJWL? Why did you choose to join?
My cousin-in-law, Melinda Kohn, thought I would be interested in joining JJWL. I
was already intrigued by the organization as I had noticed her posts about its
different events last year. I had wanted to become more involved in Jackson, and so
this seemed like Kismet. Once I attended the mixer for new members, I was hooked.
I was surrounded by dozens of intelligent, conscientious women who, like me,
wanted to positively impact their community. I hadn’t heard of JJWL before this, but
now as a new member, I am looking forward to becoming involved in whatever
ways I can.
Tell us a little about yourself-work, family, etc.
I moved to Jackson recently: I bought a house here just last December. My
hometown is Leslie, but in many ways, though, I grew up here in Jackson: my
mother’s family is from Jackson, and I am still a member of Queen of the Miraculous
Medal Parish. I graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor’s in
Secondary Education (English and history), and later from Eastern Michigan
University with a Master’s in Educational Psychology. I lived in San Jose, California
for two years where I worked as a live-in nanny. I currently work as a bookkeeper
with SpartanNash Finch. I have one Siamese cat, a one-year-old girl named Stella.
What’s the best book you have read lately?
The best book I’ve read lately was actually a reread: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day,
by Winifred Watson. It is a delight.
Where’s your favorite place to go in town-whether meeting friends for dinner,
taking the family out on an outing, or spending a date night with your
significant other?
My favorite restaurant in Jackson is Yen King. Hands down, best Chinese around.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I love well-written books, like those by Jhumpa Lahiri, Dara Horn, Carson McCullers,
and others. I particularly love older movies, from Marx Brothers to Hitchcock to
musicals to campy classics. As a new homeowner, my house is of great interest. I’m
working on striking a balance between aesthetic remodeling and practical
improvements. I sing in the Adult Choir of my church. I also enjoy gardening,
organizing, live music, good food, baking, and spending time with friends and family.
