Week of 9/26/2016
Week 6
Students in grades 2-5 will be taking unit assessments this week to assess what they have learned in this first six weeks. This data will drive our intervention over the next few months. Students have been working hard thus far!
Please make sure you have signed up with your teacher for parent/teacher conferences on October 3rd. If you have not received communication from your teacher about this, it should be coming home Monday/tomorrow with your student.
Mrs. Ewald would love toilet paper roll donations for Fine Arts class. Please send in your empty rolls between now and November!

THIS WEEK IN THE CLASSROOM
PK Passengers
Lang Arts:
Letter H, write & sound
The student will expand knowledge of words.
The student will blend and segment syllables.
Math:
Sort objects and describe how the groups are similar and different;
Sort objects by attributes
SS/Sci:
Students will show good habits of personal health and hygiene.
Identify the five senses
Kinder Passengers
ELA:
We will be using sight words to create sentences.
We will be reviewing letters Aa, Dd, Hh, and Mm and using the letters to build CVC words.
Reading:
We will be predicting what comes next in a story and identifying the setting (where the story takes place).
Math:
We will be using numbers 0-5 to describe more and less relationships.
Science/Social Studies:
We will be learning about the four seasons and the difference between weather and a season.
We will practice reciting the pledge to the American and Texas flag.
First Grade Passengers
Math:
Unit 1- We will be taking our Unit Assessment over the skills of addition and subtraction. Please be sure to be practicing at home.
English Language Arts:
We take our Reading CBA Assessment over the skills that have been taught. Our weekly story is “Soccer”.
Phonics:
We will be practicing skills such as short vowels, digraphs, and blends that will be assessed on the Reading CBA Assessment.
Writing:
We will show the skills taught by using correct capitalization, punctuation, spacing, detailed pictures, and sentence formation.

Second Grade Passengers
Reading:
The students will be reviewing the skills learned in the first six weeks. They will be able to find answers using the 4 resources and prove comprehension of text.
Writing:
Students will write a paper with a beginning, middle, and end using transition words.
Math:
The students will review place value, money, and number patterns by playing math games.
Third Grade Passengers
Reading:
We will be going on a field trip to TVCC to see the play "The Odyssey". We will draw conclusions from non-fiction text, and identify details as we read.
Writing:
We will write personal narratives using a prompt.
Math:
We will be rounding, practicing addition and subtraction, and learning about perimeter, in order to review for our unit test.
Science:
We are reviewing for our unit test.
Social Studies:
We are learning about earning, saving and spending.
Fourth Grade Passengers
The end of the first six weeks is here, and we look forward to sharing our learning with parents at conferences on October 3rd.
Math:
Our 4th graders are ready to multiply their knowledge using various strategies and algorithms. Oh, did I mention we are working on our multiplication skills next week?
Science:
What a mixture of knowledge this week will be! We'll be able to separate it like a Mixture, and dissolve our knowledge in our brains like a Solution!
Texas History:
Students will identify and compare ways of life of American Indian groups in Texas during the Late Prehistoric period. Students will identify how these groups modified their environment and used the natural resources of their regions to survive.
Reading:
In a story WE will find - I will, HE will, THEY will - to determine Point of View! 4th Grade reading classes will analyze stories to determine first person and third person point of view.
Reminders: Unit 1 Test will be on Monday. Students will choose their new literacy novels for the next six weeks on Friday. Job pages will be done at home as well as the assigned reading chapters. Literacy projects will be due every Friday!
Writing:
Students will participate in musical edit activities and racing wars to get excited about finding and correcting errors in writing. We will begin focusing on strong introductions and conclusions.
Reminders: Unit 1 Test will be on Tuesday.
Fifth Grade Passengers
5th grade will be enjoying the production of "The Odyssey" at TVCC on Thursday followed by a picnic lunch. Students may bring their lunch from home OR get a sack lunch from the cafeteria.
Science:
Wrapping up the unit on Properties of Matter
Math:
Completing ALL operations with whole numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication & division) and order of operations
Reading:
Concluding our Fiction Unit. Nick WON the "Word War" with Mrs. Granger. (She really was in favor of the word frindle all along.)
This week completes our First Six Weeks. We will be taking our Unit Tests. Please encourage your child to get a good night's rest and come to school with a positive attitude.
