CES 1:1 Take Home Initiative Update
On Friday, November 6, you received a letter introducing our 1:1 iPad Take Home Initiative. This letter outlined our plan to give all parents the opportunity to have their student(s) bring their iPads home daily, during breaks, and over the summer. This is a new initiative for us and we are fielding several questions that can be answered here. Please take a moment to read over the frequently asked questions.
Are all students required to take their iPads home?
No. This is a voluntary program designed to give students access to their device whenever they need it. No digital homework will be required and teachers are not expected to assign work that can only be completed on an iPad at home.
Who can take an iPad home?
Only students of parents who have completed the Student-Parent Device Use Agreement and have paid the $35 fee are eligible to take their iPads home.
If you have already sent your form to the school but have not sent your check, your form will be sent back to you through your child’s take home folder.
Click here for a link to print the Student-Parent Device Use Agreement.
Does a parent have to attend the November 19th meeting in order to be able to have his/her child take an iPad home?
No. This meeting is for 1:1 iPad Take Home Initiative information purposes only. If a parent is comfortable with reading the Student-Parent Device Use Agreement and understanding the Trust Card expectations, attendance is not required.
Parents that have questions about the 1:1 iPad Take Home Initiative are encouraged to attend the meeting on November 19th at 6:00 pm in the CES Learning Commons/Library.
Is there a fee associated with taking an iPad home?
Yes. Each device requires an annual $35 Student-Parent Device Use Agreement Fee. This fee must be received along with the signed copy of the agreement before a device will be sent home. The maximum annual fee for a single family is $100. Please send a check made out to Colleyville Elementary with the name of the student in the memo portion. Multiple students can be included in one check as long as the Student-Parents Device Use Agreement lists all of the student’s names on it.
Click here to pay the Device Usage Fee on-line: gcisdschools.revtrak.net. Please note that a $5 processing fee will be charged in addition to the $35 fee.
If my child brings his/her iPad home, how will it be charged?
We are recommending that students place their iPad charger in their backpack. Charging will be expected to be done overnight while the iPad is at home. If the charger is in a backpack, students will be able to charge at school if necessary.
If my child participates, is he/she expected to bring the iPad home everyday?
Yes. While he or she may not use it each night, it needs to come home to be charged. Also, having the iPad at home nightly allows parents to access the iPad to see the work that was done throughout the day.
Students that take their iPad home each night will be expected to bring it back to school each day. If a student does not bring his/her iPad, he/she will NOT be issued one for the day and will have to make up any classwork that is missed when the iPad comes back to school.
What are the expectations for personal usage of the iPad at home?
GCISD has developed a Trust Card for students to follow when taking their iPad home. This is similar to the Trust Card students are expected to follow when they use their iPad at school. This agreement should be signed and kept at home for students and parents to refer to.
What happens if my child’s iPad gets lost, stolen, or damaged?
The Student-Parent Device Use Agreement Fee provides repair or replacement coverage, both parts and labor for the device, battery, USB cable/adapter and up to one incident of “accidental” damages. A second incident of “accidental” damages will be subject to a $49 fee. After a 3rd loss, student may lose the right to take the device home. Please report any loss or damage to the iPad to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.
Parents are allowed to purchase a more durable case for the iPad if they feel the one provided by GCISD will not adequately protect the device. Not all iPads will have the same case on them when they come home.
Does GCISD provide a filter for internet access on the iPad?
Not when the iPads are connected to any network outside GCISD. All filters for home use would require parents to set up the device to access their home wifi network and would use whatever filter measures they currently have in place. Parents should not expect the iPads to do any kind of internet filtering when the iPad is at home unless they set that up themselves.
Where can I learn more about Colleyville Elementary School’s 1:1 iPad Take Home Initiative?
We have a 1:1 iPad Initiative web page that has information and links for parents to learn more about all aspects of our 1:1 Initiative. http://www.gcisd-k12.org/domain/3223
From the School Nurse
Parents, we are in the early stages of flu season. Here are some reminders of common signs/symptoms of the flu:
- Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Headaches
- Fatigue (tiredness)
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults
**If your student is kept home for any of these combined symptoms, I would appreciate that information as we try to keep track of the flu trends throughout the flu season (October-March).
Tips to remind your students to help prevent the flu:
- Frequent hand washing
- Cover cough/sneeze (not with hands), whenever possible use a tissue and be sure to throw it in the trash
- Avoid sharing of drinks/foods, avoid too close of contact
- Avoid touching eyes/mouth/nose. Hands off face.
- Keep surfaces clean and disinfected as much as possible
- If sick, avoid contact with others
- Getting the flu vaccination if possible

CES is celebrating America Recycles Day which is November 15th!
CES is partnering with World Wear and recycling. Be a part of diverting thousands of pounds of shoes and clothing from local landfills by filling our donation bin with your gently used shoes, clothing, purses, belts, wallets, hats, caps, backpacks, hard toys, stuffed animals and pots and pans. For every pound collected from you, our PTA receives $0.12. It's a convenient way for you to have neater closets, drawers, toy boxes, and kitchens, and the knowledge that less textile waste will end up in our local landfills.
What to do?
After collecting items, put your items in the large Recycling bin that is located by the back entrance to the school.
When?
Recycling begins now and bins will be kept at CES until the Christmas Holiday Break begins which is December 18th. So let's clean out and get your house ready for the holidays and more stuff!
