UPDATE: District continues to plan to return secondary students to in-person learning
Last week the District shared some good news about our district’s plan to transition secondary students to in-person learning. Governor Tim Walz issued updates to the Minnesota Safe Learning Plan prioritizing in-person or hybrid learning for secondary schools as long as certain safety measures can be implemented.
Our district had already started making plans to safely return secondary students to full-time in-person learning. This plan was presented last Tuesday to the Board of Education. We did not learn about the new state guidance until the day after the Board meeting, shortly after we shared our update with families.
As we are planning to bring secondary students back to full-time in-person learning, we are now actively reviewing the state updates and will be assessing our district’s plan. It is important to understand that there are new and significant safety and health requirements that pose operational challenges that are currently being assessed. Any updates to the district’s secondary transition plan will be shared on Tuesday, Feb. 23 during the regular Board of Education meeting.
Stream the Board Meeting LIVE on Tues., Feb. 23rd at 7 p.m.

Student Election Judge Opportunity
As you know, the district will be holding a school district election on May 11th, 2021. We are currently in the process of recruiting election judges for May 11th and with 20 precincts spanning two counties and multiple municipalities, that means approximately 120+ election judges to be recruited during a pandemic.
Students 16 years and older can serve as "Election Judges in Training" and because this is a non-partisan election, they can do all the things a regular election judge can do, so this is a great opportunity for them to get a first hand look at how an election works. Please read the below attachment for more information
March 2nd is Opportunities Day!
Opportunities Day is coming up on March 2. Opportunities Day is designed for high school students to explore careers and the path to obtain that career. This is an important opportunity for all students. Seniors will complete their job shadow/research online. Juniors will take the ACT. Juniors will complete activities in the Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) at a later date. Sophomores and freshmen will complete MCIS activities online. Please see the attached document, which outlines the activities by grade level.
Since most of these activities will be completed online, we hope families can have a discussion about the information students are learning. Families, please see the first page of the attached document for an overview of what your student will be doing.
Important Dates: Freshmen and sophomores will be given the entire school day on March 2 to complete the activities in MCIS. However, they can be done ahead of time. Freshmen and sophomore activities are due by the end of the day on March 2.
Juniors are scheduled to take the ACT on March 2. The remaining junior activities in MCIS are due by the end of the day on May 3.
Seniors should see their high school’s Career Center website for the requirements for the Job Shadow, also due by May 3. (link to Lakeville South)

LSHS Activities Updates
There are two more articles published on lakevillesouthnews.com by our LSHS Journalism Club students.
The first "new" article is titled "The Mr. Beast Effect: The Three Lucky Channels" by Liz Curtin. The article explains how a famous Youtuber created their own Youtube Rewind video, since Youtube did not produce its own this year. As a part of his video, Mr. Beast drew three random channels to give a shout-out to. Liz interviewed the three content creators to see how the shout out has impacted their respective Youtube channels.
The second article is "Top Songs of 2020" by Sarah Student. In the article, Sarah takes a look back at the most popular songs across numerous genres and examines TikTok's role in launching certain artists into the spotlight.
