Remember knives are safest when they're sharp. When handing a knife to someone else, hold the blade and give them the handle, that way no one gets hurt, and everyone is happy. If you need to cut two different things, make sure you wash the knife between foods to avoid cross contamination.

Make sure you use a timer to avoid burning your food. If your food burns not only will it taste bad it can cause fires and risk the health of the people around you.
