Safety Matters
On Monday and Tuesday of next week, the JACY House of Richmond, IN will be presenting an informative two-session program titled, Child Safety Matters to our students. This program focuses on four areas: bullying, cyber-bullying, child abuse, and digital dangers . Providing this sort of programming to our students is mandated. The opt out letter that you received earlier in the week is to be signed and returned ONLY if you DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE. Otherwise, I am not looking for these forms to be returned.
Famous Americans
This week's reading story is Brave Bessie, a biography about Bessie Coleman, an early American civil aviator. She was the first woman of African-American descent, and also the first of Native-American descent, to hold a pilot license. This story will be a nice lead-in to our Famous Americans flip book. This in-depth study helps us to address the following Indiana Academic Social Studies Standards:
- "Describe how people of different ages, cultural backgrounds and traditions make positive contributions and how all citizens can respect these differences."
- "Identify people who are good citizens and describe the character traits that make them admirable."
Fun with the Presidents
We've learned one thing for certain this week: Studying the presidency need never be dull again! We laughed and laughed as we read the hilarious President Taft is Stuck in the Bath. The giggles continued as we read and performed a readers theater of Duck for President! We brought history alive and made research meaningful as we read the delightful book George Washington's Breakfast. In this story plot combines history, biography, research, cooking and one determined child who sets out to find out what The Father of Our Country ate for breakfast. Do you know? Hoecakes! Be sure to ask your child what they are, because (s)he knows, as we partook for George's breakfast ourselves on his (almost) birthday. Be sure to check out Adam and Hope modeling the fun in the photos below.
Comparing Cookers: STEM Fun
For the 2016 Iditarod, musher Jeff King built a tall, thin cooker that looks a lot like a miniature smokestack. He bolted it to metal behind the chair on his sled. Typically the cooker is nothing more than two very primitive metal buckets nested within one another, and is used to melt snow for water for the dogs and to thaw food for both the dogs and the musher. It can boil up to 3 gallons of water at a time. (Under race rules, mushers must carry a cooker and pot that can boil that amount at one time). While considering the efficiency of King’s newest invention, students questioned whether or not the opening size of these cookers has a direct effect upon the cooling of its contents. An investigation ensued! Ask your child how we put various models to the test. Be sure to check out photos of the young scientists below. This inquiry meets the following STEM standards:
- "Pose questions, make observations, and obtain information about a situation people want to change. Use this data to define a simple problem that can be solved through the construction of a new or improved object or tool.
- Analyze data from the investigation of two objects constructed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs."
Next Week's Share Topic
Some people believe that “if March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb (and vice versa).” Do you have an interesting experience to tell about any type of weather? Perhaps you were outside as a terrific thunderstorm was brewing. What do you do on the hottest day of the year? Maybe you know someone who has experienced a hurricane or tornado. Tell us all about it.
