Feb./March STEAM Book Challenge
Adkins Learning Commons
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Join young Jack as he climbs a giant beanstalk to a magic castle in the clouds. Meet a hen that lays golden eggs and a harp that sings by itself. And don't forget the ogre. A classic fairy tale with a vigorous look that will leave you chanting "Fee-fi-fo-fum!"
Jack Needs a Parachute
Oh no! Jack has done it again! He loves magic beans, and as a result, he finds himself being pursued by the giant. This time, the giant tricks Jack by lining the beanstalk with barbed wire. Jack will not be able to climb down the beanstalk. He needs your help to escape.
Challenge:
Build Jack a parachute to help him escape the giant. Be sure to use the Engineering Design Process. Click here for the steps.
Materials:
*Use any type of PAPER product
*Use some type of string or other way to attach the parachute to your "Jack"
*Use a small action figure, Lego man, figurine, etc. to be "Jack"
*You will need a stopwatch to time your experiment
Goal:
Discover who can keep Jack in the air the longest.
Guidelines:
Students will submit their parachute design to the Learning Commons the week of March 6-10th. The parachute designs will be tested on Friday, March 10th. These parachutes will be on display in the Learning Commons until Friday, March 24th. The winning parachute designer will be featured on the morning news on Monday, March 20th.
Testing your design:
Step 1: Drop Jack from a designated height. Using the stopwatch, record Jack's fall time without the parachute:___________
Step 2: Attach the parachute to Jack and drop him from the same height in Step 1. Using the stopwatch, record Jack's fall time with the parachute:__________
Step 3: Can you improve your parachute design to make Jack stay in the air longer?
Step 4: Test your new parachute design by repeating Step 2. Be sure to record the time.
