A Message from the Principal

Dear SCES Families,

Can you believe we have welcomed the month of May? This year has been a very busy and productive one, which is probably why it has gone by so quickly! Our teachers and students have been working really hard all year at achieving the goals that they set back in early September of this school year. The month of May provides many opportunities for our students to shine as they show all that they have learned. Our entire school has been "Rallying Around Our Blue Jay Test Takers", as our 3rd and 4th graders prepare for and take their state assessments (SC-READY and SC-PASS) over the next two weeks! Everyone is supporting them with this motto: "I CAN and I WILL! Watch Me!" We are excited about watching each and every one of them shine!

It is not a secret that we have awesome teachers here at Shoally Creek Elementary School, and we would like to invite all of our families to help us celebrate them during National Teacher Appreciation Week! ♥ This special week will take place Monday, May 6 - Friday, May 10! Some easy and simple ways to share your appreciation would be for your child to write a thank you note, make a special card, draw a picture, or bring in a flower or small gift. These items don't have to cost anything, yet they will mean so much!

Another special day that we celebrate in May is National School Nurse Appreciation Day! We invite all of our families to help us celebrate our wonderful school nurse, Nurse Steadings, on Wednesday, May 8! She does so much for all of our students that we want to show her how much she is appreciated, too! ♥

So with state testing, celebrating our teachers and school nurse, and the many end-of-the year events, please be sure to read about all of the awesome events scheduled at SCES during the month of May! Thank you for all that you do to support our amazing school!

Sending lots of positive energy your way for another awesome month!

Mrs. Meyer

Assault on Mt. Mitchell

Please mark your calendars for the morning of Monday, May 20 for the annual Assault on Mt. Mitchell/Marion cycling event! The cyclists will leave downtown Spartanburg at 6:30 am and will make their way up Parris Bridge Road, traveling right past Shoally Creek Elementary. There will be road closures beginning that morning at 6:00 am through possibly 7:00 am. It is highly likely that this event will impact traffic flow in and around the school. Please know that we will work with our families on that morning, as this event may delay some arrival times. Thank you!

End-of-Year Carnival

When students returned from Spring Break in April, they began earning blue tickets for being "Drivers of their Bus" (making good choices/following school rules/etc.)! Each students is earning their own blue tickets in order to use them to get into our annual end-of-year Carnival! The Carnival is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th! We want all of our Blue Jays to be able to earn enough blue tickets to get into the Carnival and then also have tickets to spend on the fun events at the Carnival!! There will be a dunk-tank, a variety of carnival games and prizes, face painting, inflatables, popcorn, shaved ice, and much more for students to enjoy with the tickets that they earn throughout April and May! Please encourage your child to earn those blue tickets! Also, occasionally ask your child or your child's teacher how many your child has earned! We want ALL of our students enjoying a fun day for the work they have done all school year! ♥

Morning Drop-off Procedures

Just a couple friendly reminders regarding morning drop-off procedures of our students:
  • 1. Kindergarten and 1st grade students (and older siblings) drop-off at the back of the school (Kindergarten line); while 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders drop-off at the front of the school. This allows for a more even number of drop-offs at both places.
  • 2. Please pull all the way forward when dropping-off students at the front of the school. This keeps the car line moving and affords for more cars to unload at one time. We have two entrances (200 and 300 wings) in which students can enter to safely get into the building and move to their classrooms. For everyone's safety, please refrain from going around vehicles while in the drop-off lane.
  • 3. The supervising staff members go inside at 7:38 am. Students are to be in their classrooms by the 7:40 am tardy bell. Please escort your student into the front office after 7:38 am. Morning routines & classroom instruction begin at 7:30 am each morning.

We certainly appreciate your understanding and cooperation when it comes to following these procedures.

*Important to have current phone numbers & email addresses:

  • Please make sure that you are stressing to your school families that they need to have the correct email and phone number in school messenger. Otherwise, they may not receive important information like school-cancellation calls or registration information.

*From Bus Transportation Department Concerning School Delays:

  • When we have a 1-hour delay, the bus will arrive at the bus stop 1 hour from the normal pick-up time. So, if the bus normally arrives at 6;15 am, then on a one-hour delay, it will arrive at 7:15 am.

  • When we have a 2-hour delay, the bus will arrive at the bus stop 2 hours from the normal time. So, if the bus normally arrives at 6:15 am, then on a two-hour delay, it will arrive at 8:15 am.

*Transportation Changes:

All afternoon transportation changes must be communicated to the front office by 11:00 am. Please reference the Student Handbook for further information.

Please remember the South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Laws and Regulations in regards to the number of minutes students must attend school each day. Every minute that a student is not in class is counted and reported to the state. If a student misses even 15 minutes of class, this adds up to over an hour of class each week. Please make every minute count for learning!
