What is Sickle Cell Anemia
A birth defect inherited through you parents that causes irregularly shaped and unhealthy blood cells that stops cells to get enough adequate oxygen through out the body.
Causes and Complications
- Slowed or blocked blood flow
- Swollen hands or feet
- infections
- delayed growth
- vision problems such as blindness
- pain that can last long term
- Raises chances of having a stroke
- High blood pressure
- organ damage
Testing And Treatment
- Test for it by blood tests, or red blood cell count
- test the mothers amniotic fluid before birth
- Treat for it with antibiotics and pain relievers
- Bone marrow transplant
- Stem cell transplant
- supplemental oxygen
Preventions and Life Outlook
- You can try to prevent it by going to a genetic counselor
- The life of someone with Sickle cell anemia can be very painful
- Daily hospital visits
- Lots of antibiotics
- Therapy and support groups
