East Edition

March 21-25, 2016

Congratulations, Celebrations and Gratitudes

Congrats to 3rd, 4th & 5th graders who completed their math PARCC tests last week, and to Jonathan and the proctors for facilitating a successful week of testing with minimal glitches.

Thanks to the Social Committee for planning fun school spirit days and social events for our families and staff members. Staff should be sure to keep an eye on the East Google Calendar for upcoming fun events.

Are you on time?

Be sure you are on time to your AM & PM duties? Morning duty starts promptly at 7:40 am. Parents are expecting supervisors outside by this time so that they can get to work.

Afternoon duties should be at their stations and positions at 3:20 pm, prior to the bell ringing. Please prepare your class appropriately to get to your afternoon duty in a reasonable time a few minutes BEFORE the bell rings.

It's all about safety for our kids.

Recess Detention & Disciplinary Consequences.

Recess Detention should only be given in short increments of time (2 minutes or less) by being asked to stand on the wall. Please be sure to let the recess duties know about the amount of time of missed recess when you send kids outside with that need. Do not expect students to tell the duties themselves.

Besides PE, recess is the only time that students get fresh air and movement. It is also the only time they get to practice important social skills. If students have such severe enough behavior as to need to miss an entire, or majority of a recess, then please consider if the behavior is severe enough to be a non-urgent office referral instead.

Natural consequences are the most effective to cause a change in behavior. Be sure that recess is a natural consequence to the behavior infraction. If you are having trouble thinking of a natural consequence to a misbehavior, ask Wendy or Sarah for help.

If you do not have a classroom set of expectations and consequences created for different types of behavior/discipline infractions, please see Wendy soon for assistance in building that system within your classroom. Discipline should never be a surprise and kids should know exactly what type of consequence they get for which type of misbehaviors. Predictable consequences help curb misbehavior, because it shows that the teacher follows through on those pre-determined actions. This takes the emotion out of discipline, keeps discipline consistent and truly has higher rates of success than "on-the spot" disciplinary decisions. Punishment, physical, emotional or other types, should never be used in a school setting. If you need help in this area, please let Sarah or Wendy know, there are teachers in our building that have successfully built these systems in their classrooms.

Friday Collab Time - Friday, March 25

For 5th, 1st and 2nd

You will be meeting with oyur grade level partner at the school building.

For 2nd, 3rd & 4th

You will be meeting with your district grade level teachers at the admin building to continue work your facilitated work on scope and sequence and/or other priorities.

For LIt Coor.

I am assuming you will continue your work together on Phonemic Awareness and Phonics at the admin building.

For PE, Music and Art Teachers

I will get back to you on a schedule. Per the email sent last week it stated: "PE, Music and Art will be on a rotation schedule for facilitated conversations, as we are doing with all elementary grade level teams. Each week groups will meet around this work, however, some weeks will be facilitated and other weeks you will be on your own (on those weeks where there are not facilitators, you may meet as a team wherever you choose!) A schedule of facilitated dates will be out soon!"

I have not seen this schedule yet. I will forward as soon as it I can.

Staff Meeting - Tuesday March 22nd

Due to a conflict with New Teacher Induction and a need to meet for budget reasons in a timely manner, we will move our staff meeting to next Tuesday, March 22nd at 3:40 pm. This meeting was originally scheduled for the following Monday. At this staff meeting, you will have an opportunity to provide input into budget priorities. This will be the only purpose of our staff meeting on Tuesday. I anticipate we will be finished by 4:15. If you are not able to make it to this meeting, please let me know so that you can provide your budget input in a different manner. I apologize for the short notice of change of date.

This staff meeting on Tuesday, DOES conflict with the Teacher iPad Camp. If you are planning on going to that event, please do so, and then come to Wednesday morning's meeting instead. If you cannot do the staff meeting on either Tuesday or Wednesday, then let me know and I'll get budget input from you in a different manner. Your input is important and we'd like it from every staff member at East.

If you cannot make it to this meeting and would like to contribute input for the budget, you can attend a meeting at 7:20 am on the following day, Wednesday, March 23rd in the art room.

Here are the rest of the staff meetings currently scheduled for the rest of this school year. These dates will only change if there is a need for additional discussions needed for district budget topics.

  • Monday, April 18th
  • Monday, May 2nd
  • Monday, May 23rd

PARCC IS HERE

PARCC testing is around the corner and slated to begin March 14th. Due to creative thinking, we will only have 7 full days of testing. We will have several other days of make-ups, but be able to experience a much shorter testing window.

Breakfast will continue to be served to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on all 7 testing days on the window.

The computer lab will not be open or available to other grade levels for approximately 3 weeks, until such time that all make-ups test are completed. Jonathan will send an email to everyone when it is ready to receive grade levels at their regular computer lab time.

Library services will be suspended until PARCC testing is over. Please plan appropriately for your classes to NOT visit the library. 2nd Step/Friendship Skills classes with Wendy will continue as planned. Plan on no library services for the next 3 weeks, but if testing is completed ahead of time, then we will only suspend for 2 weeks. Jonathan will let us know.

Coupons - Believe Kids Fundraising Began on Wednesday

Grade level teachers, don't forget to collect or ask for coupons everyday and send them to the office for the daily drawing at 3:10 pm. The more enthusiastic you are about collecting the coupons, the more they will come in and the more students will sell items. Starting Thursday, March 17th, daily drawings will occur at the end of the day at 3:10 pm for special prizes and privileges. Pass out fox charms and a lanyard when students bring in their first coupon and then a new charm of their choice for every coupon after that.

Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day - Thurs, March 24th

Help show appreciation and recognition to the guys that keep the snow plowed, the ice chipped, the lights on and the plumbing going. We will be delivering doughnuts and coffee to these guys on Thursday, March 24th in the morning. Please take a moment to sign the card that is in the teacher's lounge, and express your appreciate for these guys that help keep things going in our very old building. They often come with only a moments-notice and are a very small crew of six who maintain all buildings and do all snow and ice removal for the entire district.
