Are you an Ambassador?
A group of SDSU international students will be selected to participate in a leadership development program promoting global understanding and cross-cultural exchange in San Diego public schools. This is a voluntary program (no stipend paid), but ambassadors will have a $400 budget for travel and presentation/materials costs paid through tuition reimbursement. (Ambassador must show tuition payment directly to SDSU for reimbursement. Those who cannot will have travel and materials reimbursed directly.)

Would you like to share your experiences and insights about your country and culture with American students and teachers? Do you enjoy working with children? Are you a global citizen interested in developing leadership skills? If your answers are yes, the Intercultural Ambassador Program may be an excellent opportunity for you. This program offers SDSU international students the chance to develop unique skills in promoting intercultural understanding in San Diego public schools. What are the expectations for this program?
During Fall 2019 and Winter 2020, ambassadors will receive 9-12 hours of training in public speaking, intercultural communications, global competence, and leadership development.
During Spring 2020, ambassadors will prepare and make 3 presentations to two different public school classes (total of 6 presentations) on topics related to their respective countries and cultures.
After training, the time commitment during Spring 2020 semester will be approximately 20 hours. This amount includes the time necessary to prepare and give 6 presentations and includes travel time to schools.
Ambassadors will be reimbursed for mileage costs to and from school sites.
Who is eligible and who gets selected?
To be eligible for this program, you must be a student during Fall 2019 and Spring 2020, hold a valid F-1 or J1 visa, have an overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher, and have access to transportation. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements and provide strong responses to the questions below will be invited for an interview. Brief interviews will be scheduled Oct. 22-24 for select applicants. Participants will be selected for their:
Ability to communicate effectively to groups, especially children;
Ability to view international events and issues from a global perspective;
Ability to gather and effectively share information about one’s country and culture;
Interest and enthusiasm for contributing to a better world; and
Previous experience with youth, intercultural programs, and activities.
