Senior Seminar Update
What should students have done?
Are you wondering where your Senior is at in their process to applying to college, completing scholarships and the FAFSA? Here is what was required in their Senior Portfolio for this quarter:
- A SMART Goal outlining where they see themselves a year from now.
- Completed 3-5 college applications (there are several fee waivers on my door).
- Completed deadline list (a list of deadlines for college applications and key scholarship deadlines at those institutions).
- A list of community service activities ( handy for future scholarships)
- An accomplishment list (again handy for future scholarship applications)
- Copy of High School Transcript
- Key college terms
- Working on scholarships and the FAFSA
What do parents need to be doing?
- The FAFSA is open. Please complete it as soon as possible. Most institutions have a "pot" of money that is first come first serve. Get the FAFSA done early to receive the most money!
- Have a set time each week for your Senior to work on scholarships. Students who have a designated time weekly to complete applications receive more money. Example: Sunday 2-4 weekly is family scholarship time.
- Monitor stress levels- Senior year is stressful!
I.C.A.P.
Individual, Career, Academic Plan
What is I.C.A.P?
I.C.A.P is learning about yourself, linking that to career goals and knowing what you need to do to reach those goals. The goal is for students to have the skills they need to make educated career choices. The graphic above is a great summary of what I.C.A.P is meant to do for students. Here are the state guidelines.
Our school uses Naviance to fulfill this state requirement. All students have a Naviance account they can access at anytime to explore careers, take interest inventories, research colleges and much more.
This week 7th graders learned about I.C.A.P., how to log into Naviance and most picked a career cluster they were interested in. 8th grades completed a mutli-intelligence assessment to learn how they are "smart" Mr. Corum's section of 9th graders completed their "DO What You Are Assessment" which is the Myers Briggs personality type assessment. Ask your student to show you their Naviance account.
I look forward to meeting with the rest of the 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in the next few weeks.
ATTENTION FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORES and JUNIORS
- Most elite scholarships have a ACT/SAT minimum to even apply. I have Seniors who are missing opportunities because their score is too low. Most who are missing these opportunities only have one SAT/ACT score. Research shows that your score usually goes up if you take these tests more than once! Check out the requirements of the Daniels Fund, Boettcher, and Hagan scholarship. Notice the SAT/ACT score needed to apply. You will need these scores before entering your Senior year. Do not wait!
- You can take Biology as a Sophomore if you have a SAT/ACT score
- You increase your options for college.
- It is just plain SMART!
