What If There's a Snow Day During Finals Week?
Since it is predicted by some sources that there will be significant snow next week, we have developed an alternate plan for finals. Our Earth Science staff assure us that if we have a plan for snow, we can almost assure good weather.
The current finals schedule will remain in effect except in the case of inclement weather.
If a 2-hour delayed start occurs, the exam schedule will not change. Exams will start at 10:30. Study sessions will be unavailable.
If school closes for a day or multiple days, we will push into next week on January 22, 23 and 24 as needed.
Need a little math help? Final Countdown Review and Study Session
This Sunday, January 12, from 12:00-4:00 PM in the IVC, the Math Honor Society is hosting a Final Countdown Review and Study Session. At the Final Countdown students have the opportunity to study with friends, get questions answered by peer tutors, practice speeches, hear test taking strategies, and/or get organizational help. Students from the Math Honor Society will be available to tutor and advise your students. Student led Final Exam strategy discussions will occur each hour on the hour. Short mindfulness breathing techniques, also led by students, will be offered on the half hour. Students may drop in for an hour or stay the entire afternoon. Sweet and savory snacks will be provided. All are welcome!
Attention 10th grade Parents & Guardians: PSAT
The AHS Counseling Department will be holding a 10th grade class meeting on January, 27, 2020 to teach all 10th grade students how to interpret their PSAT score reports. Score reports will be mailed home by the end of January and will include additional information for parents to understand scores.
Teen Drug and Alcohol Harm Reduction in Ashland Schools
This semester, students in Ms. Floren’s Community Action Projects class at AHS chose to investigate a problem in their community, analyze policies to address it, and promote the policy they deem to be most suitable. The problem this semester’s students chose to analyze was teen alcohol and substance abuse.
After analyzing statistics, interviews with police, school administrators, parents and students in the community, they have chosen to embrace a policy of “harm reduction” in Ashland Schools.
They put together a policy they believe will create the most harm reduction and greatest positive impact on affected students. It includes Student Curriculum in 6th, 8th and 9th grades, Parent Workshops several times a year, and making Drug Testing Kits available to students through the AHS Health Center.
Our Final CAPs Presentation took place on Weds, Jan 8 at 4:45 in AHS Library. We were joined by school administrators, members of the Drug and Alcohol Coalition, Dept of Health and Human Services, Ashland School Board, parents, teachers, and our own State Senator, Jeff Golden.
Ashland Independent Film Festival - Student Film Competition
Interested in submitting a film for the Independent Film Festival?
“We at the Ashland Independent Film Festival want to remind your students that we have just one week before the final deadline (Jan. 17th, 2020) for student LAUNCH submissions!
There’s no entry fee, films need only be 5 minutes (or under!), and there are cash prizes for the most unique, inventive, thought-provoking, and entertaining films in each category. Their best resource for information and helpful tips is here.
If you still have questions after exploring our AIFF LAUNCH links, we’re always here for you. Please feel free to email me at the address below – and if you’d prefer a phone call in return, be sure to include your phone number and times when you can be reached.
Remember… just a week to the submission deadline! If you’d like one of our AIFF Education staffers to visit your classroom in January, there’s still time. Just email us ASAP at the link at the bottom of the page, and we’ll schedule a classroom visit to help light the creative fire.
We hope to see many of your students’ films among those at our AIFF student LAUNCH screenings this year.
Kind regards,
Jana Carole

LiFT for Teens - Planned Parenthood Event
LiFT - Family connection is a superpower!
Research shows that a strong parent-child relationship is a superpower that helps teens achieve their goals, and supports healthy teen outcomes, including:
• Decreased rates of unwanted teen pregnancy, STIs, depression, and drug and alcohol use.
• Increased school success.
Parents and teens alike say that they feel uncomfortable and ill-equipped to have conversations with one another about difficult topics, and this makes building strong connections very challenging.
We have a really exciting program coming up in Ashland and Grants Pass* for teens and the supportive adults in their lives to share family values, strengthen relationships, and gain communication skills. It is a 6-hour, evidence-based, engaging and interactive program that is open to all Rogue Valley 8th-12th graders and their parent(s)/supportive adults. The program is free for participants, and will include a catered lunch. See the flyer below and attached, and please direct any teens or adults you know that might be interested to me or the online RSVP form linked in the flyer! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you for your support.

Yearbook Parent Ads will be accepted until January 10
Looking for a creative way to tell your graduate, “I love you and I’m proud of you” now that their high school years are coming to an end? If the answer is yes, think about placing a “Senior Ads” in the yearbook. Yearbook dedication ads are a great way to give your child the special recognition they deserve, for everyone to see, in the 2020 yearbook.
Space will be filled on a first come first serve basis and we need to meet a minimum number of ads to place them in the book.
Proceeds of these ads help keep the cost of the yearbook low and provide books for students in need.
