News and Information
Book Orders-Book orders are due Wednesday , Sept. 17. Thank you and happy shopping!
Party Planner Wanted!
I'm looking for a person, or even a couple people, who would like to help organize our 3 parties this year. Basically I'd be giving you a list of volunteers to contact via phone, text, or email to ask for certain foods, a craft or a game. If you'd be interested in helping me out in this way, please let me know!
Refocuses
Please make sure you sign your child's refocus and have them return it to me the next day.
Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:50 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child will not have homework this year unless:
1. They are absent and make up work for the day will be sent home.
2. They are falling behind on Rocket Math facts, at which time I will send a letter to inform you there will be homework until they catch up and/ or meet the expected level.
Reading
We continue to focus on main idea/ details and visualizing when reading. We are also working on fluency this week with a focus on speed and pacing. Reading at the correct speed helps the listener understand your reading and also makes it make sense!
Math
We started Lesson 5 Add Using Arrays. Please note that we are NOT writing these with multiplication equations yet. Please use repeated addition!
Here are a couple of videos if you are not familiar with arrays.

English and Writing
We started a new unit on personal narrative writing. We will be focusing on the steps of the writing process while writing in the personal narrative genre- that means the story really happened to us!
- SHOWING NOT TELLING when you write. Instead of saying "I felt sick." You could say, " I clenched my stomach and bent forward right before I lost my lunch." This helps the reader make a better picture in their mind while reading your piece.
- Using transition words to keep our story in sequence: first, next, then, last, etc.
- writing a rough draft
- adding facts and details
- editing and revising
- using a rubric to make our writing the best it can be
- publishing our work
English skills: interrogative and imperative sentences
English- compound sentences, declarative sentences
Spelling Words
Pretest -Wednesday
Final test- Friday
dry dries dried lady ladies fly
flies baby babies crying trying
candy fry tried fries puppy
puppies happy cry cried
Homework Help and Hints!
Sequencing the events is a story is a difficult concept for many children. When you read a book aloud to your child or when they read one to you, try having them make a bulleted list of the events in the order they happened. You can even color code the events to show beginning, middle and end. Here is an example from Imogene’s Antlers, by David Small, a book we read earlier this year. By the way, using phrases for this activity instead of complete sentences takes some of the frustration away because they don’t have to focus on a capital, end mark and subject/ verb agreement. Also, they could verbally retell you the story and you could write it down for them.
- Thursday Imogene work up with antlers
- Trouble getting dressed and going downstairs
- Mother fainted
- No help from doctor and principal
- Brother Norman looked in encyclopedia- rare form of miniature elk
- Mother fainted
- Family called milliner
- Milliner made a huge hat
- Mother fainted
- Practiced piano and went to bed
- Woke up without antlers
- Grew peacock feathers
