May is a busy month at school. In this vein, please see a few informational messages below...
6th Grade Promotion
6th Grade Promotion will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the CB South Auditorium. 6th Grade students are encouraged to dress up for this important event! Mill Creek Home and School will be soliciting volunteers to help with this event, and they especially encourage 5th Grade families to volunteer as a way of learning about what promotion will entail for their child for next year.
STAR Assessments
All elementary schools in the District have been administering the STAR Reading and Math Assessment at different points during the school year. The STAR Assessments are one of many evaluation tools we use as a school to gauge student academic growth and progress. The first STAR Assessment was given in early fall, followed by another administered in January. Our end of year STAR Assessment will be given during the week next week. Each Assessment takes about 20 minutes to complete.
Spring Intruder Drill
During the school year, the District asks us to conduct a series of emergency drills. One of those is an Intruder Drill, which we are asked to conduct 2x per school year. We conducted one earlier in the school year, in November. We will conduct our second Intruder Drill next Thursday, May 18, around 8:45 a.m. For elementary students, and Intruder Drill involves the following:
- Early next week, your child's teacher will guide students through an informational presentation. Then, on Thursday, May 18, we will make an announcement to the students and staff that we will be conducting a drill. The announcement will be preempted with information that this is only a drill. During the drill, teachers and staff will guide students through securing classrooms and evacuation procedures as appropriate. The Warrington Police Department is being notified of our drill, and we may have officers in attendance to help us with our security practices.
Thank you for your support as we prioritize the safety of our students.
If you have any questions about any of the above information, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Have a wonderful weekend!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Cocca, 1st Grade
This past week, Ms. Cocca's 1st Grade students were working on an inquiry project to follow-up their reading My View Unit, “Making History.” In this unit, the students learned about why the past is important and read biographies, including Jackie Robinson and Eleanor Roosevelt. In the first step of this inquiry project, students interviewed a special person in their lives, asking questions such as, “Which person from history do you admire and why?” “Which invention has most changed your life and how?” and “What did you like best about school when you were in first grade?” Ms. Cocca's students wrote a short biographical narrative about the life of their special person and began revising and editing their work. The interviews lead to fantastic conversations and discovery, such as the students learning about a “walkman” and about influential people from history, including FDR and Helen Keller.!
