Mr. Goetz's Corner

Dear Families of Deerfield,

This week the Oakland County Health Division has adopted new quarantine guidelines for Covid-19 cases. As a result, we are pleased to announce shortened quarantine times for positive cases of Covid-19, and shortened quarantine times for those exposed to Covid-19 outside of school. The school will also no longer be conducting contact tracing for exposures in school, since our students are wearing their masks and social distancing. We are hoping that these new guidelines will decrease student absences, so more time will be spent learning. We know that all of the new guidelines can be a lot to remember, so please review the chart and frequently asked questions below. Also, we are always here to help if you have any questions.

Next week, our PTO has 2 fundraisers going on. They are hosting their Used Book Sale January 19th-21st. The sale will be held during lunch and students can purchase books for $0.25. It is a great opportunity to find a new read! Also, Little Caesar's pizza kit orders will be due on Friday, January 21. Don't forget to send in those orders!

Remember, there is no school on Monday, January 17th, as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Have a great long weekend! I look forward to seeing everyone back in school ready to learn on Tuesday!

The Positivity Project

This week, our Positivity Project focused on 'prudence'. By practicing prudence, students plan for their future by making careful choices each day. Our days are filled with choices, no matter how small, and our students have been doing a great job at using prudence to make the best choice.

Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year

The Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are presented annually to honor and reward teachers in Oakland County who have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession. Oakland Schools has created these awards out of a conviction that a quality public education system is essential to the health and vitality of our community. We believe that encouraging excellence in education is the shared responsibility of all who reap its benefits.

If you would like to nominate a Deerfield teacher for consideration for this award, please write a statement describing why you feel that teacher is deserving of the nomination. You can include specific examples and stories of how the teacher goes above and beyond to support your child, engages them in their learning, relates to parents and demonstrates leadership in the community. Please limit your statement to 600 words and submit all nominations to david.goetz@avondaleschools.org by Monday, January 17.

Thank you for helping us to recognize the outstanding teachers that we have at Deerfield!

Winter Weather and Water Bottles

The winter weather has arrived and the students were excited to get out and play in it. It was fun to see the students outside making large snowballs and snowmen. They did a great job showing the Positivity Project character strengths of teamwork, perseverance and creativity. We did have some students who were not able to enjoy the snow because they did not have their snow gear. Please be sure your child has snow pants, winter coat, gloves and boots so that they are able to enjoy the snow with their friends. Also, please be sure to label your child's clothing with their name on it. This way if it is found, we are able to return it your child.

We have noticed some friends not bringing their own water bottle to school. With our drinking fountains closed, it is important that students bring their own water bottle to be able to drink during the day and while they enjoy their snack. Please remember to send in a water bottle with your child everyday.
