Something To Make Us Think.....
Two Backpacks
According to Brown, all students come to us with two backpacks. On the first day of school, they step into class with one backpack, one we can see, that contains all their supplies. They also enter with the second backpack, the invisible backpack, that contains "their story." The invisible backpack may contain shame, trauma, guilt, and pain that the student is carrying with them but we are unable to see....or can we? Defiant behavior? Sleeping in class? Skipping class? Inappropriate language?
In situations like this, Dr. Brown says, "I have grown to believe that children need a way out of potentially volatile situations, and it is also fine for them to "win." As far as we know, this may be the only time this student has ever come out on top."
We ALL have that invisible backpack, not just students, that impacts how we act/react in certain situations. Keep this in mind the next time a student(s) is "pushing your buttons" and ask yourself...is this a situation in which it's okay for them to win? :)
