Same Street Summer Art Camp
Day 5 Collage & Shape
Day 5 - This week came to a close with what I would call a classic collage. I felt it was important for campers to experience what this could look like while also revisiting many of the concepts we explored all week. What is a classic collage? For me it is an image that uses carefully chosen, visually striking elements gleaned from existing media (books, magazines, calendars, etc). These elements are then placed together to tell a new visual story. Each camper pulled elements out from a bag so they would not be too distracted by what the image was. The elements were: one large animal, 3 solid color geometric shapes, and then 3 mix-up pieces to bridge it all. The hard part was making them come up with multiple compositions before they could glue it down. Although it was difficult to convince them that it was good to live in the process for a while, I noticed growth in their combinations of elements as they had to sweep off their page and start again.
