Anchor Charts We Use
(in Mrs. C's treehouse)
What are anchor charts?
Anchor charts are the group discussions we have on the carpet about new units of study. Whenever students are learning, I create posters with words and visuals to help support their understandings.
Sometimes these charts are pretty and sometimes they are messy. Students always have a voice in the creation of these charts. They help decide how to make it better for them to understand and remember new pieces of learning.
Plot Maps
We use these to pull the important parts out of stories (summaries) and to plan our personal narratives.
Character Development
This helps us remember that characters change in stories based upon what is going on around them.
Character Traits
A few of the words we use to describe the thoughts or actions of characters.
More Character Development
Our charts become more complicated as we dig deeper into a concept. I always link previous knowledge (schema) to new ideas.
Personal Narratives
In our room, we call small moments from our lives our "snapshots." Everyone is learning that personal narrative just means "your story." We try not to write photo album stories. Look at the reasons why.
Rounding Numbers
Here's one way to think about rounding. We use number lines and can make them like hills. Look at how we start off introducing the idea of rounding.
x2 Strategy
We wrote up strategies for the x2 facts.
Just ignore the x4 because we decided it wasn't working for us this way!
x4 (Again!)
We wrote a new chart for x4 so students could see how they went from a game to a problem of the day (POD). Our POD's are usually much more challenging but for the sake of space, we kept it simple.
