Escape Plan
Under Ground Railroad
Ripley, Ohio ---> Ontario, Canada
What to do:
The Under Ground railroad is not under ground nor is it a rail road it is a a vast network of people who help fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada, it is not run by any single organization or person. Rather, it consists of many individuals, many whites but mainly black, who know only of the local efforts to aid fugitives and not of the overall operation.
TO THE The Peculiar Institution:
1) Wait until the darkest time of night and slip out of your quarter and make sure you don't see anyone, like your overseer around or any lights on in the man house.2) Look up at the sky, try and find the Big Dipper and Little Dipper, at the tip of the little dipper you will see the North Star. Follow the North Star, it will lead you to Canada.
3) Another helpful tip is to look for moss growing on trees. Since moss usually grows on the north side of the trees, this will be your compass if the clouds are covering the stars.
4) Migrating birds fly north in the summer.
5) Try to find a nearby river, even though they may be hard to cross, dogs can not smell he scents in water!
CAUTION: beware of traps set by slave owners! Keep your eyes on the ground!! You don't want to get a flogging by your overseer, you know how bad they hurt!!
Remember:
The free blacks, the escaped slaves, and even white northerners WILL help you through your escape to Canada.
Beware of someone calling you "darkie" that is a derogatory term referring to the blacks.
Also think about Nat Turner, he murdered over 100 white people during a major slave rebellion that resulted in him being killed. He knew what could have come of his revolt but he did it anyway, believe in yourself and once you leave NEVER look back.
Denmark Vesey was an African-American man who was most famous for planning a slave rebellion in the United States in 1822.
