Updated Policy on Flu
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has updated exclusion requirements for staff and students with influenza (the flu). The period for keeping individuals with the flu out of school (exclusion) has decreased from 7 days to 5 days for influenza cases diagnosed by a physician.
Persons with a case of influenza should stay home for five days from the time the illness begins or until the individual is fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medications, whichever is longer.
For more information about the flu visit: http://www.kdheks.gov/flu/.
Flu prevention measures include:
- Get a flu vaccine
- Practice good handwashing
- Cover your cough with your sleeve
- Do not touch your eyes, nose, mouth throughout the day
- Stay away from those who are ill and stay home if you are ill

Cold Weather Recess Guidelines
As we get in to more cold weather it is imperative that families check the weather forecast. Please make sure your children are dressed warmly enough for recess each day. So that there is a common guideline regarding recess, the following policy is used.
THERE WILL BE NO OUTDOOR RECESS WHEN:
1. The temperature is 15 degrees or below.
2. The wind chill index is 0 degrees or below.
3. There is falling moisture.
This does not preclude individual teachers from taking their class out for a few minutes of fresh air. All students are expected to participate in recess unless they stay in because of teacher or parent request. If parents wish their child to stay in at recess, a note should be sent to the child’s teacher indicating their desire. If a child is to be kept in for more than three consecutive days, a note from the child’s doctor is requested. The district health office feels that, “Generally, if a child is too sick to go outside for recess, he is too sick to be in school.”
