Required Summer Reading: The Brooklyn Nine

In order to continue supporting literacy, rising 7th grade students are required to read the following book over the summer:

The Brooklyn Nine, a novel in nine innings by Alan Gratz.

We have chosen The Brooklyn Nine, a novel in nine innings because it is an exemplary piece of literature that students overwhelmingly enjoy reading. We will make meaningful thematic connections to this novel throughout the course of 7th grade and in particular during our Short Story Unit.

Copies of these books will be available in the front office at Rugby Middle School for check out on a first come, first served basis during the summer. These books may be checked out for a maximum of two weeks, and then must be returned for other students to use. Please be an advocate for your child’s education and prepare them for the 2014-15 school year!

Preparing for 2015-2016 Rugby Reading Raiders & Battle of the Books

We are fortunate enough to have two very special reading programs at Rugby Middle School. Rugby has a team of active readers who compete annually in the NC Battle of the Books. We also have the Rugby Reading Raiders monthly book club meetings where parents and students who have read the same text can come and celebrate the book through discussion, activities, and fun! If you want to get a head start on books that might be one of next year's Rugby Reading Raider selections, you can start reading books from the 2015-16 Battle of the Books list as Rugby Reading Raider selections will come from this list. The Battle of the Books reading list also provides a list of excellent, high interest books your student will enjoy. If you are looking to enhance his or her summer reading experience, grab some of these titles from your local library or book store!
