Wairoa College
Newsletter 27 October 2022
Message from the Principal
Seniors are currently preparing for their external examinations and completing their internal assessments. It is particularly pleasing to see so many students in Year 12 and 13 who have already passed their NCEA Level 2 and 3. However, we are not at the finish line yet. I encourage students to keep pushing to do their best.
Year 7 and 8 students were very busy last term preparing for the Wairoa District Kapa Haka Festival held at Wairoa College. The festival was a fantastic day with many schools participating. It was also wonderful to see so many members of the community come out and watch our tamariki. I would like to thank all the staff and students for making this an awesome day.
We have been preparing for prize giving this term. We are looking forward to the occasion celebrating our students and what they have achieved this year.
I have employed a new Property Manager, Keith Spence, who has started this term. I have also employed a new Science Teacher, Priya Dayal who will join us in November.
Year 9 and 10 students have their end of year examinations in week 4 this term. Teachers will be supporting them in their study.
If you are still wanting to enrol your child for 2023 please complete the online enrollment form or collect a paper application form from the school office.
I would like to wish the Year 7-13 leaders well with their beach and river clean up tomorrow. It is important that we respect our environment and give back to our community.

NCEA Exam and Study Leave
Study Leave for all Year 11 - 13 Students
Study leave for all Year 11 – 13 students begins on Friday 4th of November. Students are
permitted to return to school if they need somewhere quiet to study or have assessment
work to complete with teachers. If students do return to school, they are expected to be in
school uniform and to sign-in and out at the office.
Students are also expected to attend external examinations if they are entered in them.
Students will receive their examination admission slips on Monday. The admission slip
outlines the examinations that students are entered in and when these will take place.
Students need the admission slip to have entry into the exam.
Derived Grades
If a student is unable to attend an examination because of illness, injury or family
bereavement please contact Miss Mahy ASAP as the student may be eligible for a derived grade. If this is due to illness there is a form you must collect from Miss Mahy BEFORE you go to a doctor for a medical certificate.
Senior Progress Reports
End of year progress reports for Year 11-13 students will be distributed to students on Thursday 3rd November following senior prize-giving. A digital copy will be emailed to you if we have an email address on record for you, as well as being available on the KAMAR app.
Year 9 and 10 Examinations
Year 9 and 10 end of year exams will take place 7 – 14th November. It is important that
students prepare for these exams. The results help us to decide end of year prizes and are
also good practise for the NCEA exams students will sit in the senior school. Students will
have been provided with information about what is in each exam and what they need to do
to prepare.

Services Academy Trip
On Wednesday 19 October, students from our Year 10 Services Academy visited 5/7 Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment compound located in Napier. We were met by Staff Sergeant John Prichard, one of two New Zealand Defence Force Recruiters responsible for Hawkes Bay and the East Coast region. Students received a warm welcome followed by an informative presentation explaining the process for joining the Military. Students learned about the different roles and opportunities available including the best options for improving your chances through the recruitment process. After the presentations, students were taught how to tie a bowline from Petty Officer Bryony Henricksean, finishing off with physical training activity centred around the beep test. Overall, a great day had by all. Thank you NZDF for your time and effort by providing our students with options for the future.

Wairoa College host’s the 2022 District Kapa Haka Festival
At the end of Term 3, Wairoa College was proud to host the annual Wairoa District Primary Schools Kapa Haka Festival. It has been ten years since the college hosted the event. We were supposed to host the event last year but COVID restrictions prevented this from happening forcing the event to be postponed.
The venue for the kapa haka was staged in front of the Year 7/8 block due to the grounds being too boggy and wet in front of the college Wharenui, Te Aka Matua. What better way than to stage the event in front of the new furnished Year 7/8 classrooms. The grass area and sails near the rock was also an ideal place to sit under and watch the performances. This area was quite handy and close to the food stalls that were on sale for the community.
Nine schools throughout the Wairoa District descended onto Wairoa College where they were
welcomed by all staff and students with a mass Haka Powhiri. Following the Powhiri, our Year 7/8 Kapa Haka group were first on stage to perform. The students performed with great pride in front of their older peers, teachers and whānau. Our Kapa Haka group had set the scene for the rest of the schools to perform throughout the day.
It was truly an awesome day with amazing performances from all the schools that took to the stage. Near the end of the day, the Te Ngaio Mauri waka taonga was handed over from Wairoa College to next year’s hosts, Nuhaka School, who were the last school to perform. Wairoa College Year 7/8 look forward to performing at Nuhaka School in 2023.
One of the highlights of the events was seeing so many people come to Wairoa College to watch the Kapa Haka performances and most of all, enjoy their day. A dignitary that had attended said that it has been such a long time since we had an event where our Wairoa Community can come together, due to COVID. This was certainly the case with the Kapa Haka being staged at Wairoa College.
A Glamorous Ball, with plenty of Glitz and Glitter
Year 12 and 13 students were treated like celebrities as they arrived at the Bi-annual Wairoa College Ball last month. A large crowd assembled to watch them arrive in a wonderful variety of old, grand and distinctive vehicles; including motorbikes, Ford Mustangs, Chevrolets and a Kiwi Transport truck. The students were certainly dressed to impress, with plenty of style and class shown by all.
- Voted King and Prince were Kefir Kirwan and Ceizar Fasso.
- The Queen and Princess went to Grace Whaanga and Araley Rudd.
- The Best Dressed Couple were Araley Rudd and Steven Huata
- Best Dressed Female and Male, Eriqa McClutchie and Panapa Keefe.
The DJ played music ensuring ball goers danced the night away. Miss Wallace was on hand as chief photographer ably assisted by Miss Nathan. There was an impressive supper thanks to Miss Hayward and Mrs Murphy and helpers.
Around 25 teaching and office staff helped on both the night and with decorating of the Hall and packing up on the Saturday. Thank you very much.
Special thanks also goes to my co-organiser Mrs Martin and the brilliant Ball Committee lead by Araley Rudd and Bethany Kerley.

EIT Trades Academy Gateway
Yr 11 students had the opportunity to experience a day at the Trades Academy. The tutor explained the importance of commitment from every student . A great example he used was of a past Wairoa College student, Keoni Clark. He explained to the students that with the support of his parents and his willingness and commitment to drive to Napier two times a week to his EIT automotive course he had gained an apprenticeship at Huxtable motors in Taradale Napier. Keoni has passed his Level 3 and is working towards his Level 4 while continuing to work.
Students are busy at Tairawhiti Trades Academy and at school with their Gateway classes trying to complete practical and theory assessments. We have also been blessed with a new room for our careers and Gateway. The room is very beneficial to our students. We really appreciate and are very thankful for the new space.

Diane McCallum Chairperson
My work across Wairoa has given me insight into many of our Early Childhood Centres, and schools. I have the utmost admiration for the work of our teachers and Tumuaki-Principals, in Wairoa, and see this as an opportunity for me to be able to use the knowledge and skills I have developed over the years to continue to support those that are making a difference for our learners.
I am passionate about the learning and achievement of tamariki across Wairoa – our children are the most amazing young people and deserve the best opportunities possible. I believe that we can achieve that by working together – kura, families, whanau and community. I am honoured to have a chance to play a role in that journey.
Melissa Kaimoana Parent Trustee
Our kura have huge influence on our future leaders as well as our future Te Wairoa.
They also form a large part of our communities beating heart. In large we know that our current social environments are impacting on the education sector and for many whānau education is going in the wrong direction. We can’t change the world, but we can change the way we see and implement the education spectrum. We can change the way we interact with our whānau, and our community to rise our tamariki,
mokopuna up in education and as leaders. As an experienced governor, with a wee bit of knowledge about education, and a pulse for Te Wairoa I’d be keen to guide the well needed changes I speak of.
Saskia De Kock Staff Representative
I am Saskia and I have been teaching at Wairoa College for going on 2 years (October). I am the head of the Mathematics Faculty, a Health and Safety Representative and on the PPTA executive. Previously, I taught at Manurewa High School in Auckland for 2
years and at Willowridge High School (in South Africa) where I was the Head of Health and PE and subject lead for Mathematical Literacy.
I am on the Board to act as a voice for ALL staff as it is important that their views are heard.
Luana Mitchell Parent Trustee
My name is Luana Mitchell. I currently work at the Wairoa Community Centre. I have 5 children, with 2 of them attending Wairoa College.
I am actively involved in a lot of sports in the community, through my work and in the schools, running the netball and basketball school’s competitions and also coaching various teams.
The reason I wanted to be a BOT member was to have a voice for our whānau when it is needed and to be more active for the school. As I have children attending, I want to know the best is offered for them in all aspects of schooling.
Jamesa Baty Parent Trustee
My name is Jamesa Baty, I have one daughter that attends Wairoa College.
I was born and raised in Wairoa, and I am a farm girl at heart. My daughter and I play a wide range of sports in the community, and we also volunteer at the Wairoa Community Centre as swimming coaches.
My purpose for being on the board is to ensure that my daughter and her peers have the right supports and opportunities to succeed and achieve at Wairoa College.
Rob Unwin - Parent Trustee
Wairoa A & P Society, Wairoa Ski Club, Wairoa Museum Trust.
We currently have our youngest of three boys Lochie attending Wairoa College.
Having been in business for over thirty years I am lucky enough to have met and worked with a diverse range of people and have gained experience in areas such as
strategic and financial planning.
I am passionate about the Wairoa community and believe there is untapped potential in our youth. I am here to help support the management team in enabling the students to fulfil their potential whether it be into employment or further education.
