The Mustang Minute

Week of May 16th

FROM THE PRINCIPALS' OFFICES

Greetings Mustang families!

It's MAY-hem here at Brookwood...and in a GREAT way! Last evening, our BMS students shared their musical talents with us in another fabulous Spring Concert. HUGE thanks to all of the families who came out to support them and to Mrs. Collins and Ms. Bullock for their leadership. Ms. Skalecki and Mrs.Nast brought our 3rd Graders up to BMS for a visit on Friday. Students enjoyed a tour of the building with Mrs. Franz, meeting some of the staff, and Lunch/Recess with the 4th and 5th graders! Tonight is THE NIGHT - the BFO Family Fun Fair! We hope you'll all join us from 5-8 for some cotton candy, games, inflatables, and more! There are still MANY more exciting events up ahead in the coming weeks. Please read on for details.

Have a fabulous weekend, Mustangs!

In the case of inclement weather, we will move into the gymnasium. Spring Concert - A Hit!

Our BMS Mustangs participated in another FANTASTIC Spring Concert this past Thursday. From ukuleles to beautiful singing to awesome performances by our 5th-8th grade band students - we had it all! Special thanks to all who came out to support our young musicians. We appreciate you! Rock on, Brookwood!

3rd Grade Tour Day at BMS

On Friday, our 3rd Grade students came for a visit to BMS. They got the "lay of the land", and got to meet some new staffers they'll be working with next school year. The day started off with an introduction of our 4th Grade Related Arts teachers and information about the specials students will be partaking in next year. Students then toured the building with Mrs. Franz and hung out in the 4-5 wing for a mini orientation. The day finished with lunch with the 4th and 5th graders and of course - recess! They'll be back again next week as well for an official "Shadow Day" experience and to enjoy a showing of our Willy Wonka play with our 4th and 5th graders. Our 3rd graders certainly seem to be fitting right in, and we can't wait to officially welcome them into the BMS family as 4th grade students next school year!

Golden Horse Shoe Award

The Golden Horseshoe Moves On...

Ms. Springer has received the Golden Horseshoe! Mrs. Hoerth passed it along to her for her flexibility in taking on other roles when needed, for being friendly, and for always being a contributor to our Brookwood schools. Thank you, Ms. Springer for your hard work and dedication to our students and to making our schools GREAT!

WSMA State Solo and Ensemble

Congratulations to 8th grade student, Myles Derickson for receiving a "Superior" rating on his classical guitar solo at the WSMA State Solo and Ensemble festival at UW-Parkside on Saturday. Myles has been playing guitar for many years, but became more serious about practicing in 5th grade. For the competition, he played Capricho árabe by Francisco Tárrega, and it was a phenomenal performance! Congratulations, Myles! We are so proud of you!

From the Classroom...

What's Happening in Mrs. Horak's Art Classes?

It’s clay time for 3rd grade in the BES art room as well as the 4/5th graders in Mrs. Horak’s BMS art class! Third grade artists made a turtle sculpture out of red clay, pressed pencil holes on top of the shell and created their own clay turtle pencil holders! It has been a fan favorite for 3rd grade artists. Fourth & fifth grade artists put their sculpting skills to work creating a pinch pot monster. Each student began by making a pinch pot. After learning to slip and score to attach clay pieces together, their imaginations went wild creating fun monsters out of clay. They added crazy hair, eyeballs, horns, hats, and one artist even put braces on her monster’s teeth! As their art teacher, I have to say this is one of the most creative batches of clay monsters to have come out of the BMS art room! Brookwood artists love working with clay!

What's Happening in Mrs. Tadlock's 7th Grade Science Class?

Over the past month, 7th grade students have been learning about various body systems and how they work together. The final lab was a classic...frog dissection! This hands-on learning experience enabled students to see how all the various systems connect with one another. Students were also able to compare and contrast the organ systems of a Frog to a Human. Students who opted out of the dissection were given a paper option, where they colored and constructed a paper version of a frog’s internal anatomy. This provided them with a similar experience within their comfort level. Either way, our Mustangs learned so much from this hands-on approach!

Old News, but Good News!
