Monday Message
From the desk of Dr. Harrell
February 10, 2020
In the last few days, I’ve been part of student recognitions and received emails sharing recent student successes. On Friday, I participated in the celebration of two of our students who received state recognition for their performance on the football field. As I watched these two young men receive their awards, I reflected on the fact that they both had been enrolled in our school system since kindergarten. I knew that their former teachers would be thrilled to see their accomplishments.
Later in the weekend, I received the weekly UHS newsletter and saw more UHS students enjoying success in their different events and activities such as steel drum, wrestling, meat judging, FFA, soccer, construction trades, and many more. As I shared in this Monday Message, students at all grade levels are involved. They are getting to enjoy successes like never before. Students in these photos have been a part of our district, learning from you, looking to you for direction, and depending on your encouragement. These successes are made possible because you are a champion for them.
In order for our students to be champions, we first must champion them and provide the support and encouragement to take risks; to step out of their comfort zone knowing they have a safe haven here.
Uvalde has incredible students who are successful and want to be involved. Some may need a bit more guidance and encouragement than others, but the greatest thing about our district is that we are here to champion ALL students; to challenge them to greatness, and to celebrate when those successes come.
When we talk about championing students, I always come back to Rita Pierson’s TED Talk. As I mentioned about a year ago, I often listen to her, hear her passion, and it re-ignites the passion I have for this work. I hope it does the same for you.
