Obstruction of Love

The playlist of Helena's tragic love life

Love is full of twists and turns, as well as roadblocks and obstructions.

Over the course of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Helena's love life is like a fish on land; hopelessly flopping around with nowhere to go. She loves a man who doesn't share the same feelings, and she's trapped in a love... square... that includes her best friend.

Throughout the book, each character flip-flopped their romantic interest various times, which led to Helena believing that one of the men was mocking her.

Al Green-Lets Stay Together

Al Green - Let's Stay Together

It is known that Demetrius and Helena were in a relationship before the book begins. However, they were separated throughout most of the book. Helena is also very devoted to Demetrius, even though he sometimes treats her like human garbage. Let's Stay Together by Al Green tells the story of a man who would do anything for his partner, even through the various ups and downs. This is very similar to Helena's relationship with Demetrius, even while they are not together. Helena would have listened to this song while she and Demetrius were still in a relationship, because her utter devotion probably would have been even more prevalent back then.
Spoon "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb"

Spoon - You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb

Another part of the theme was how love is unpredictable. I think this song fits perfectly with Helena's feelings, and how her relationship with Demetrius will eventually explode, just like a cherry bomb.

You got that cherry bomb

Blow out that cherry bomb

We lost it long ago
You and me

Bon Iver - Skinny Love

Bon Iver - Skinny Love

Over the course of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Helena has the misfortune of being in love with someone who doesn't love her back, Demetrius.

Demetrius recently left Helena to pursue Hermia, one of Helena's close friends. By doing this, Demetrius has created a romantic void in Helena's life, one which she believes can only be sealed by Demetrius' love. Skinny Love by Bon Iver is about how a relationship has lost its spark, how he no longer loves his partner. The title is evidence to support that, because Skinny Love most likely means a love that has grown weak, how there is barely any affection left.

Spreading some salt on a wound is known to have healing properties, as it stops infection. The lyric, "Pour a little salt we were never here" could mean that the relationship is deteriorating, but they need to try and mend it, hence the lyric, "Just last the year." Helena might listen to this song when her and Demetrius' relationship is falling apart.

Superchunk - Driveway to Driveway

Superchunk - Driveway to Driveway

As stated before, it is known that Helena and Demetrius were in a relationship before the book begins. The breakup would have been very hard on her, because even now, she's still obsessed with him. Driveway to Driveway is about a couple that recently had a difficult breakup after a long relationship.

My hand on your heart had been replaced
And I thought it was you that I had chased

The one singing the song was heartbroken about their split, and from the verse above, It appears the other had already found someone else (much like Helena's situation). Helena would probably listen to this song right after their separation, probably while crying into her pillow.

Arcade Fire - Crown of Love - (6 of 10)

Arcade Fire - Crown of Love

Another song about a relationship gone awry, Crown Of Love is a song about begging for forgiveness, like in this verse.

If you still want me, please forgive me,
The crown of love has fallen from me.
If you still want me, please forgive me,
Because the spark is not within me.

It's pretty evident that all the artist wants is forgiveness, much like Helena wants to be back together with Demetrius. She would maybe listen to this song while riding in a train car, staring out of a window into the distance.

R.E.M.-Losing My Religion(With Lyrics) *in the description box*

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion

After losing Demetrius, Helena probably would've questioned whether everything she had once thought about love was wrong, and in doing so, might have started to listen to this song, which, from the title, I would think that the artist lost all of their faith, their hopes and beliefs in love, due to a messy breakup.
Radiohead - Creep

Radiohead - Creep

Creep by Radiohead is a song about feeling unworthy, to not be able to approach someone who's "out of your league." In the verse,

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so very special
I wish I was special

the artist repeats how he wishes he was "special," maybe like how Helena feels about herself whenever she thinks about Demetrius and their relationship.

Oasis - Wonderwall - Official Video

Oasis - Wonderwall

Helena's extreme devotion is apparent (and really creepy) throughout A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the title of this song is Wonderwall. From a definition standpoint, a wonderwall is something that you constantly find yourself thinking about, something that holds your attention completely. Helena would listen to this song while thinking about Demetrius (so pretty much every second).
The Police - Every Breath You Take

The Police - Every Breath You Take

A large portion of the book is taken up by Helena constantly following Demetrius, and Every Breath You Take is the definitive stalker song. Just look at the lyrics:

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you.

There's really no escaping the fact that this is a creepy song, something that Helena would listen to while she's gunning her nondescript van, hiding behind a tree, or crouching in the bushes.

Emotions - Best Of My Love

Emotions - Best Of My Love

Finally, at the end of the story, when Demetrius and Helena reunite as lovers, Helena would have been overjoyed, the one thing that she really wanted to happen happened. Helena would probably listen to this song while dancing around, thrilled that her lover decided to come back to her.

Demonstrating sweet love and affection
That you give so openly, yeah
The way I feel about ya, baby
Can't explain it
