Job Description and Work Environment

Physicians treat and diagnose patient's injuries and illnesses. They examine patients, take records, prescribe medications, and perform diagnostic tests. They also counsel patients on their diet and hygiene. Since physicians work in hospitals and clinics, they work with administrative and healthcare personnel. Many physicians work in group practices, allowing them to share some of their patients with several other doctors. Physicians tend to be on their feet most of the time, and work anywhere between 60-80 hours a week. Some physicians work irregular hours which includes overnight hours.


Physicians have very challenging and time consuming education requirements. Most physicians must complete four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, and three to eight year in internship or residency programs. Considering medical schools are highly competitive, they require scores from the Medical College Admission Test, leadership qualities, and letters of recommendation.


The average wage for physicians per year is $220,942. Earning vary depending on the region of practice, amount of time in school, and hours worked.
