SMS Video Shows Year's Highlights

Principal Joey Slate presented a video of photos highlighting Shawnee Middle School's 2019-2020 school year.


Slate also introduced two SMS students, Clara Timmons and Bella Dahlman, who led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. Timmons and Dahlman are students who are very active in academics and extracurricular activities at SMS.

Central Office Reports

Dr. April Grace related the following during her report to the board:

  • SHS Senior Shelby Jones has been named a 2020 Academic All-Stater.
  • This is Read Across America Week. Our schools are doing lots of celebrations of reading all week long.
  • SHS Wrestler Kyle Helie placed 4th in the 182-lb. Class at State this past weekend.
  • SHS Varsity Boys Basketball are regional champs. They will play Carl Albert at 6:30 p.m. at Norman North High School.
  • FFA members Dassie May, Kensington Kerbs and Keegan Carrera will be receiving their State FFA degrees this April. Dassie also received the Gordon Richards Leadership Award.
  • The Boys and Girls Shawnee Swim Teams each finished 6th at State. Freshman Piper McNeil set a state meet record in the 100-yard backstroke, won state in the 200 individual medley and was part of Shawnee High School’s 200 freestyle championship relay team. There were lots of other individual and relay medals won, too.
  • SECC is Blue Zones Project Approved.


Dr. Teresa Wilkerson and Meggan Wilson gave the Board an update on the district's continuous strategic improvement plan.


  • Wilson highlighted growth data from the district's use of I-Station to provide support in reading and math. She said the data indicates that students overall are showing growth in both subject areas.
  • Wilson also highlighted Shawnee Early Childhood Center and Jefferson's use of a HOPE room (Helping Our Pack Excel). These endeavors are providing social emotional learning opportunities for some students who need the support for classroom success.
  • Photos from the Pup Pack, the employee day care that is operated through partnerships with Early Foundations-Oklahoma Autism Center, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, St. Paul's Methodist Church, and the AVEDIS Foundation, highlighted the success of the program's initial year. Wilson said the availability of Pup Pack helps staff retention and recruitment, and she praised Gretchen Wilson for spearheading this initiative.
  • Wilson praised Community Renewal for their support of Shawnee schools through the "We Care. Campus" monthly assemblies and character education curriculum.
  • Wilkerson described Shawnee High School's efforts with the use of ACT Aspire and how the data from these tests are giving teachers a focus during their professional learning time.
  • Wilkerson also described SHS's efforts with Restorative Behavior Intervention, an initiative that has led to a 57% decrease in office referrals for repeat offenses.
  • Wilkerson shared with Board members the number of certified and non-certified staff members who have stated they are returning to Shawnee Public Schools in 2020-2021.
  • Wilkerson also shared SHS's efforts with community engagement through partnerships with Community Renewal and Native American tribes. She mentioned a student centered tribal consultation with local schools set for March 4, and a Native American Information Assembly scheduled for March 10.

Board Reports

Board President Larry Walker congratulated Linsey Mastin from Shawnee High School as the District's Teacher of the Year. He also said how much he has enjoyed reading about Shawnee students' accomplishments in the local newspapers.


Board member April Stobbe commented on Shawnee Educational Foundation's recent banquet and mentioned she believed the foundation had a successful fundraising event.

Other Board Business

  • All consent docket items were approved.
  • The Board approved a contract for Mass Architect, Inc., for the new elementary school project.
  • The Board approved the E-RATE Resolution which authorizes filing of appropriate applications for funding year 2020-2021.
  • Board members approved a bid derived from the Oklahoma State bid list for the purchase of a four-wheel drive truck for $25,156, a two-wheel drive truck for $22,716, and an SUV for $20,333. These purchases are to add to or replace transportation/maintenance fleet.
  • Several new courses were approved for the SHS Course Catalog for the 2020-2021 academic year: Computer Science Principles, Career Explorations, Cybersecurity, Leadership through Mentoring, and Service Learning.
  • The Board approved the academic calendar for 2021-2022.
  • Following a brief executive session, all certified and support personnel were approved as presented. Jennifer Epperley was also named as the new principal for Horace Mann Elementary for the 2020-2021 school year. Epperley has served as an administrative intern with the district for two years, as well as a teacher within the district for several years prior to her internship position. Current Horace Mann Elementary Principal Susan Field will be retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
