Behavior Problems - WOAH
It feels like difficult student behaviors are at an all time high! Please take a moment to have a class meeting or 5 this week to remind students of expectations, see what's going on with your little ones, and hear what they may be needing from us. The office was a revolving door this past week, and all for valid reasons. Let's try to get a handle on things if at all possible. THANK YOU for your team work!

Did you read the Penn Press?
A thank you and some next steps (follow-up from staff meeting)
- Amy is looking for a couple people to help finalize the "blurb" for the community, and to be site leaders in this work. Let her know ASAP! So far our blurb looks like this:
Human beings come in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders. As a species, we are as varied as the colors of the rainbow. All children need the love and support of their family and community to thrive. At Penngrove, providing a safe and supportive environment for all children is always our goal. We know we are successful when students can express who they are, free of judgement. We want all children to develop positive self-esteem and become happy, healthy members of society. Our goal with presenting diverse literature is to offer students two things: a mirror and a window. A mirror that reflects the lives students live, including their identity and experiences. The window is equally valuable, and offers a look IN, so that students can learn about the lives of others in the world, including those identities and experiences.
- Health Education Standards are here for your review: https://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/he/cf/
- A list of our "next steps" and brief notes can be found here:
Get clear on standards
How do we equip parents?
Letter in Penngrove Press
Time to read books
Training
Create talking points for morning meetings/conversations
Book talks for assembly with "middle of the road books" (let students naturalize topics for each other)
Keep it simple - don’t need big explanations
Nobody is pushing agendas, validate each other as we go
Creating safe space for these conversations
IMPORTANT AND REQUIRES ACTION STEP AT THE END:
During our meeting, Tracee M. shared that one of her friends has been deep in this work for years at her school in Long Beach. A wonderful opportunity has presented itself in that Jamaica (Tracee's friend) will be in Petaluma in April and would be honored to speak to our staff about the journey she has been on over the past few years. Jamaica is from Petaluma so she knows the community and she works in a district that is ahead of ours so she is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to working with students and families of all backgrounds. Here's the thing, Jamaica is here Friday - Monday. I would love to hold a special staff meeting for us to do some work with her and move ourselves forward in this area. Lunch would be too rushed and crazy, release time isn't ideal because I think we all need to be together, and Friday afternoons are usually exhausting. What can this look like for us? Would we stay from 3 - 5pm on Friday, April 10th? Would we want to do brunch on Saturday, April 11? Easter is the 12th. How about Monday the 13th from 3-5pm or Tuesday the 14th from 3 - 5pm? (We may be able to talk Jamaica into staying an extra day). I don't want to let this opportunity pass us by and I want us to be our best for the conversation so what does that look like? Please give your input ASAP on this Google form.
