The Beat Goes On...
23/24 Instrumental Music Update (grade 5) - Sept
"Young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory over the course of a year, compared to children who do not receive musical training... after one year the musically trained children performed better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy, verbal memory, visio-spatial processing, mathematics and IQ. "

- When you go to the website to check the calendar, take a moment to peruse some of the other great pages like "Classroom- Gen Info" or "Vitamins".
SUPPLIES
- PLEASE PUT STUDENTS' NAMES ON EVERYTHING. This can be a time sucker in class.
Instruments must be standard colors (e.g. flute=silver, etc.)
- Binder size: one-inch 3-ring binder with pockets. The size is important as smaller/larger ones will tear the pages of their books. I have a couple extras; if needed let me know. DURING THEIR 2nd CLASS, STUDENTS WILL GET A SPECIALLY MADE GIFT FROM ME TO PUT IN THEIR BINDERS! 😍
- Folding stands will stay at home.
Information about obtaining an instrument can be found on the supply page on the band website (linked in the buttons below). Options include renting, purchasing, etc. If finances are an issue, please contact Mrs. Timura directly.
If you are working with Pellegrino music store, they usually deliver instruments to the school on Tuesdays. I will keep it here in the band room until students have their first class here at school.
If you already have an instrument your student will be using, please make sure to take it to a qualified dealer or repair person to overhaul and/or place in playing condition prior to giving the instrument to a beginner. An instrument that is difficult to play or out-of-alignment will present major challenges.
IN CLASS & AT HOME
Woodwinds have completed their first class with great success!
Each instrument class has/will receive a first class snapshot email including the following items:
- What we learned:
assembly, tone production, etc.
- What they got:
Handouts to use for reinforcement at home and a link where you/they can find the same tools on the band website (linked in the buttons below).
- What your student should be doing AT HOME:
1-2X DAY, 10 MINUTES EACH TIME: assembly, mouthpiece tone production. Rinse, repeat!
Please don't hesitate to ask if you or the next Beethoven (your student) have any questions! :-) Especially this first rotation, if something is frustrating, they may bring in their instrument for a quick help session at the start of the school day for troubleshooting assistance.
